The development process of the organic and natural asphalt shingle is a method where an organic felt product (a choice between reused paper fibres or wood fibers) is reduced to a pulp, fashioned into sheets which are then dried, cut into strips, and added to rolls. Fibreglass roofing shingles are made from a fiberglass reinforcing pad. To produce the mat, thin glass filaments are cut and mixed with water to create a pulp, after which is formed in to a sheet. Any remaining water is then cleaned out of the pulp and a binder is added in.
The whole process of developing the asphalt shingle is identical for natural or fibreglass shingles. To make the roofing shingles, a roll of either the natural felt or the fibreglass pad is fed into a dry looper. Asphalt is utilized in the processing, but not in the same state as the asphalt used in asphalt pavement. Just before using asphalt for producing shingles, it must be oxidized. To make this happen, air must be bubbled through very hot asphalt (while using appropriate added catalysts) to cause a chemical reaction. This product is an asphalt that softens with the correct temperature ranges to produce a fine shingle. After the oxidation process, mineral stabilizers like finely ground limestone or ash are added for making the asphalt more durable. Fascinating fact, Gloeocaspa Magma which is a type of cyanobacteria feeds off of the limestone product and can form the mildew commonly seen on shingle roofs.
The slury then passes through a saturation chamber, where hot asphalt is then sprayed to remove any bits of moisture. Then the material is set inside a hot tank of asphalt to cover the shingle fibers and fillin any holes. As the asphalt cools, it is drawn into the felt which ensures greater saturation, weather resistance, and UV protection. Then a hot coating of stabilized asphalt with minerals is then applied to the surfaces of the mat. Finally, a thin layer of minerals is applied to the backside surface of the pad in fact it is put through rollers to ensure the minerals are pushed into the asphalt. By now, the asphalt has cooled down and the felt can enter the slicing apparatus. The shingles are cutfrom the back area right into a specified shape and size. The cut asphalt roofing shingles are then stacked into bundles, wrapped, and labeled for sale.
A number of remains are left when tabs are cut on the asphalt shingles. Recently, these remnants have been recycled for use to make asphalt for roads.

Due to the harsh weather we experience in Denver Colorado, pavement maintenance is essential if maximum pavement life is to be expected. In order to do that, asphalt seal coating through rejuvenation is key.
The idea of asphalt rejuvenation is to introduce a property that is not already present into the asphalt to enhance and extend the life of the asphalt binder, thus extending the life of asphalt pavement.
Asphalt seal coating rejuvenators are designed to penetrate deep into the top layer of the pavement giving the asphalt binder the required maltenes and polar compounds needed to keep the fines and small aggregate on the surface bound together, preventing the breakdown of your pavement. Pavement maintenance through rejuvenation not only keeps the asphalt binder healthy, it extends the life of the pavement because it keeps the fines in place, which prevents the base aggregate from being exposed, which is very common in heavily used parking lots here in Denver.
Asphalt doesn’t yield the same amount of money as other petroleum products, which results in lower quality asphalt. For this reason pavement maintenance is all the more necessary if long asphalt life is to be expected.
Pavement is very similar to the human body in that it is much easier to keep in good shape then to let get in bad shape and try to rebuild it.
The best way to begin pavement maintenance is to start with healthy asphalt pavement and keep it that way. It is generally recommended to apply an asphalt seal coat rejuvenator 6-12 months after the new asphalt has been laid. This will add the additional binders that will keep the fines in place and protect the base aggregate, which will aid in pavement preservation. It is very important to reapply the asphalt seal coating rejuvenator every 3 to 4 years thereafter. This will help maintain the life of your pavement and your pocket book in the long run. Continue this process throughout the life of your asphalt pavement
By utilizing this pavement maintenance method alongside a correctly designed crack sealing program, pavement life can be extended up to 10 additional years in parking lot and driveway applications here in Denver and surrounding areas.

The general purpose bucket is used for digging and scooping sand, gravel and soil. This is the attachment that you see most often at construction sites. A bucket ripper attachment mounts instantly to the front of an existing bucket and is used to tear through hard surfaces. An asphalt cutter is just about the strongest cutter in the construction industry. It can cut to a depth of 6 ½ inches and can give a clean, straight cut to the asphalt before digging commences. A backhoe coupler attachment will allow the bucket to follow the geometric curve it was designed for, and it allows for the quick attaching of different kinds of buckets as needed.
A ditch and leveling bucket is available as backhoe attachments, and is the ideal attachment for digging, sloping, and precision leveling. The backfill blade is a great leveling attachment that makes quick work of any construction job. The cribbing bucket is a heavy-duty backhoe attachment that is excellent for narrow trenching jobs and digging in tight spaces.

Construction Equipment come range from heavy machineries to mobile and portable lighter equipment. Most of the engineering equipments come with shovel or front buckets and also a small backhoe which is combined with tractor. The backhoe loaders are often used in urban engineering sites like fixing city roads and small construction sites. One of the most powerful equipment attached to the blade is bulldozer. There are some combat engineering vehicles used in engineering sites for transportation of sappers or in battlefield. The compact excavator is tracked or wheeled vehicles that comes with a swing boom and backfill blade. It is also known as mini excavator and their movements and functions are carried out by hydraulic fluid. Some of the most powerful construction equipment is crane which is also called as a tower or derrick that comes with cables and pulleys used for lifting and lowering hefty materials.
Construction machinery is manufactured and designed for performing multitasks using hydraulic power and most of the recent innovations by equipment manufacturers are full computerized hydraulic control systems and energy saving features and measures for efficient and comfortable operation. Most of these machineries are designed for performing with low emissions, less noise and less vibration. Mini excavators are designed to be used in urban areas with dense population and they are quite efficient working with safety features in narrow jobsites like falling object protection and tip-over protection in urban construction. There is lots of other construction machinery such as large excavators that are often used in mining. These large excavators are designed for enhanced performance with durability. There are some articulated dump trucks that are mostly used in construction sites.
There are lots of different kinds of heavy construction equipment produced by several manufacturers to serve the construction industry. You can see these equipments moving along, putting down new pavements, removing asphalt and grading grounds for safety vehicle travel. Some of the most popular and valuable equipment is dump trucks that are used in road construction sites including new asphalt, rock and gravel and lots of other materials. Paving removers move quite slow and are used to pull up outdated asphalt roads easier and faster as compared to front end loaders. There is some of the most famous heavy construction equipment called rollers that seal and flatten asphalt layer and make roads smoother. Heavy equipments are one of the most basic and required necessities in the world and not even a single industry can take place without these equipments. One of the most famous manufacturers of these equipments is Caterpillar who is involved in sales, designing, distributing, manufacturing and marketing of these equipments and machineries, engines, financial products and insurances.
Heavy plant machinery is quite essential for construction businesses whether it is a forklift, backhoe or skid loaders. All these equipments are manufactured and designed to build purpose and work efficiently in all environments. The latest booming industry is heavy plant machinery which is now in rising demands. These kinds of equipments are quite useful in saving money and in efficiently completing any kind of constructional task. However most of the industries need these equipments to help grow their businesses.

A ‘backhoe quick coupler’, when used in conjunction with a backhoe bucket, enables the bucket to follow the geometric curve it has been designed for. There are couplers that have been designed to allow you to attach a bucket made by a different company. An ‘all purpose, or general-purpose bucket’ is a Backhoe Attachment that is used for digging holes, scooping up the dirt and depositing it elsewhere. They are made from steel with welded edges and seams. A ‘rock bucket’ is a super strong bucket that has been designed for all your really tough jobs. Its purpose is to dig through rock, frost, ditches and so on. This piece of equipment is also made from high strength steel.
Consider these other Backhoe Attachment that you might one day have a need for. The ‘cemetery bucket’! Yes, it is the attachment that is used to dig gravesites because it has the capabilities of cutting corners to a precise 90 degrees, and comes in a variety of widths. It makes a nice neat cut. There is also the ‘high capacity sand bucket’ that is designed for the movement of materials such as sand, ash, loam, gravel, and lighter soil. The high capacity of this attachment, coupled with the fact that it is made from high strength alloy steel and is very light weight, make it ideal for moving lighter materials.
Getting into the tough side of the Backhoe Attachment is the “pavement remover”. This is the only bucket attachment that is capable of demolishing concrete and asphalt. That material is extremely heavy, but this attachment handles it with ease. It also has a special design, which allows you to lift and carry uneven loads or odd shaped pieces of pavement. An attachment called a “V” ditching bucket is made for digging ditches, and is capable of doing this with one pass. There are different slope angles and bottom sizes that can be purchased. The ‘rock and frost ripper’ does exactly what the name implies. There are also single and triple shank rippers that can be added. This is the single, most efficient method of breaking up frost, rock, limestone shale, and any other hard material.
You might want to add an ‘asphalt cutter’ to your Backhoe Attachment if this is the kind of work you do. This attachment can provide very straight, clean and neat cuts in the asphalt before you begin digging. Extremely strong and sharp cutters make this possible. You can usually reach a depth of about 6 inches with this attachment. A ‘bucket ripper’ is a bucket attachment with a row of sharp teeth on the lower edge, which allows the operator to dig or rip into a surface, removing large chunks of material as it rips.

Common Misconceptions about removing Paint, Epoxy and Thermoplastic with Water Blasting v Erasing v Scarifying v Grinding

Without vigilant inspection oversight and clear specification guidelines for pavement marking removal, roadways can be damaged with unsightly grooves. There has been a growing trend to finger blame on the use of grinders, scarifiers and pavement marking erasers. The answer for many governments is to ban the use of these types of removal practices in favor of a water blasting method. One of the primary reasons water blasting is specified is due to the way the water is applied to the surface with a rotary disc with jets angled to produce a bevel edged finish to minimize the sharp 90 degree grooving pattern that can be produced by vertical drum grinders or scarifiers. If the water was applied vertically like a scarifier and not at a rotating angle, like an Eraser, the surface would have a similar groove finish pattern. A secondary reason for water blasting popularity is that it will naturally contain all airborne dust that can created from dry-removal processes offered without a reclaim collection system. This cleaned appearance of the surface is what appeals to specifiers. There are some drawbacks to the use of water to include high capital costs, higher maintenance costs, specialized operator training, large size of equipment, scarcity of availability and large mobilization cost.
As a byproduct to water blasting at high pressures, asphaltic concrete surfaces can be damaged when the surface coarse aggregate fines are undermined, causing the surface to rut when removing thick materials. Water is also ineffective when removing thick tapes and thermoplastic materials. Inexperienced operators and frequent equipment breakdown also damage the road surface. The wet pavement makes it difficult to re-stripe and may form as ice during late season applications. Water Blasting requires the consumption of large quantities of water.
Grooved lines, also known as “ghost lines” or “false stripes”, are the result of over aggressive grooved surfaces from operators using grinders or scarifying equipment that attempt to remove the entire thick stripe in “one-pass” instead of the preferred multi-pass system. These trenched grooves collect moisture and appear as a false stripe, which can confuse the driver into following the wrong lane markings.
Scarifier machines are designed to flail or mill the substrate vertically to the surface using cutters that spin on a shaft and cut at 90 degrees which the machine is moved in the forward or backward direction. The flail or miller removal tools abrade the substrate as it strikes the surface at various depths controlled by the operator but due to how it strikes the surface a grooving pattern is a natural result. To minimize this vertical cut pattern appearance, the operator takes multiple passes using a variety of different cutting tools while working the equipment in the reverse direction of the drum rotation. This scarification action is best recommended to anchor a new coating or overlay will be applied over the materials just removed. We call this process, SMITHing or surface preparation. Some examples of scarification machines include SMITH FS and SPS models.
One low cost alternative to water blasting is the use of a pavement marking eraser. Examples of Erasers that completely eliminate lane markings without the sharp-edge grooving or “ghost-lines” includes the X Series Erasers (LNX8, X1 and X3 Erasers). Unlike the flail cutter scarifier drum system that relies solely on vertical scraping or striking which may create sharp-edge grooving, the erasers, works by breaking the coating and scraping across it simultaneously, feathering the substrate edges leaving a smoothed beveled edge finish. The Eraser assembly is held at a fixed angle to the road surface, permitting a simultaneous vertical and horizontal floating cutter action to provide a similar removal finish results as water blasting with the added benefit of controlling the depth of removal. These Erasers come equipped with a dust collection port or water spray system to eliminate any airborne materials during the removal process wet or dry.
With fewer budget dollars available for pavement marking removal, governments are looking at alternative methods and are allowing contractors to use Erasing as an alternative to water blasting. They are also tightening specifications to ban water when removing durable markings on asphalt and during freezing temperatures. Their experiences have found that Rotary Pavement Marking Erasers do a better job and now know it’s not the water that offers the finish but the method used to deliver the water to the surface. As with all removal operations, the operator must be experienced in removal operations, specifications clearly written to ban grooving and inspection in place to assist the contractor in achieving the results everyone is looking for.
In conclusion, here is a short list of reasons to Erase v Water Blast
1. Erasing offers the same rotary removal action as water.
2. Erasing protects the surface while water blasting under-mines the surface
3. Erasing is not grinding or scarification. Scarification machines use a flail-it or grinding style drum that cut the surface with sharp-edge grooves at 90 degrees.
4. Operators that attempt to remove the entire thick stripe with a scarifier or grinder in “one-pass” are prime reasons the DOT has specified
water.
5. Scarification or SMITHing is best recommended for surface preparation when a new coating or overlay will be applied over the materials just removed.
6. No-Groove Erasing is defined as a removal method that feathers the substrate edges by breaking the coating and scraping across it simultaneously, leaving a smoothed beveled edge with a rolling action cutter.
7. If the water was applied vertically like a scarifier and not at a rotating angle, like an Eraser, the surface would have a groove finish pattern.
8. Water Blasting can damage surfaces when incorrect practices are applied.
9. The wet pavement makes it difficult to re-stripe and cause slippery surfaces when temperatures fall below 32 deg F.
10. Water Blasting on asphalt concrete surfaces will undermine the surface causing rutting up to 5 years after the application.
11. Erasing uses very low profile push, ride-on or truck-mounted equipment that is easy to own, operate and maintain.
12. Erasing can be applied with or without water.
13. Erasers can use a dust collector and broom truck to eliminate any air borne containments from the job sight.
14. Erasing comes standard with a variety of removal tools to produce different finishes on asphalt and concrete substrates.
15. Erasers have been successfully used with product innovations over the last 30 years.

Tennis Court Resurfacing – When To Use An Acrylic Resurfacer

Acrylic Resurfacer is a product that is commonly used when resurfacing tennis courts and other sport surfaces. All major manufacturers of acrylic sport surfaces produce this product and recommend using it on both new and existing court surfaces. Even though many installers think of Acrylic Resurfacer as a primer, it serves specific purposes not entirely related to good adhesion.
First, Acrylic Resurfacer is a filler coat. It is designed to suspend large amounts of silica sand for the purpose of filling minor voids in the surface. Asphalt is a common substrate used for tennis court construction. Mostly comprised of asphalt binder and rock, asphalt can exhibit a wide variety of porosity from one location to another. Many factors can influence the pavement porosity, from available regional and local sources of aggregate to project specifications. Acrylic Resurfacer can fill the surface voids to produce a tight surface without voids and pits that show through the pigmented surface layers. If the surface voids are not properly filled, they can lead to some of the following problems:
-Pitting on the playing surface
-Surface pinholes that are created from air in the voids during application of tennis court color coatings
-Poor coverage rate on the pigmented surface coatings
Secondly, Acrylic Resurfacer creates or restores texture to the surface prior to application of the color coatings. Existing acrylic surfaces tend to become smooth with extended wear. The fine silica sand that was in the coating eventually rolls out and the acrylic color surface becomes polished and smooth. The resurfacer uses an angular sand to create a sandpaper-like finish to better accept the color coating layers. The colored tennis court surfaces contain a very fine, rounded sand to minimize surface streaking and application marks. If resurfacer is not applied to create proper texture, the color coating can be applied too thin by the application squeegee. An example for comparison would be cleaning a glass window with a squeegee. Since the window is very smooth, the liquid glass cleaner is wiped almost completely off. If there is no texture on a tennis court, the surface coatings will be applied in an inadequate thickness. This will minimize film solids and shorten the life of the court surfacing system.
With its heavy body, one or more coats of Acrylic Resurfacer can also be used for shimming rough surface repairs, and hiding patches from depression or crack repairs. After application, resurfacer dries to a firm, hard film and can be scraped and sanded prior to application of the acrylic surface coats.
In conclusion, the only situation where Acrylic Resurfacer is not required is when you have an existing acrylic surface with adequate texture. This occurs when the courts have been properly maintained and resurfaced before the original texture is lost. Contact the acrylic surface manufacturer for a tennis court maintenance manual and for further care instructions on extending the life of the sport surfacing system.
