Keep the area around the saw free from debris which could cause falls.

Keep the conveyor cart free of grit and debris which could allow the material to slip or twist during cutting operations.
Hold the material firmly against the backstop of the conveyor cart or guide-a-cut, keeping fingers out of the path of the blade.
Position the saw on a firm, flat area and be sure that the saw will not move in use.

Roof repair for asphalt roofs is a task that most homeowners can do themselves. Damaged shingles can be easily replaced using a crowbar, tar or adhesive and replacement strips. Comb your roof for any areas or shingles that look damaged or worn. Once you have spotted a problem use the crowbar to remove the nails from the bottom of the shingles and the nails from the row above. Much like repairing wood siding, the row and nails above the damaged area must be removed in order for you to unsecure the problem shingles. Replacement strips can come in as low as 3 shingle bundles, however for single shingle replacement use tin snips to cut out the desired amount. Use the snips to also cut out the damaged shingles from the roofing. Replace the asphalt shingles with the new batch and re-nail the both the above row and newly replaced row. Finally apply tar or an adhesive to the nail heads to create a more watertight sealing. Although asphalt roofing shingles can be easy to replace, problems are not always visible to an untrained eye. The old asphalt shingle has a base which is nothing more than really thick paper. A shingle manufacturer will dip the paper into asphalt and then granulate the shingle. The design of the shingle has been made to move after it is placed on the roof. With a letter T shape and it’s ability to lock into lace made this shingle ideal for shiplap decks and going over cedar shake.
Before building code in Vancouver required a home owner do several things to the home but taking off your old roof for a new roof was definitely not one of the rules. This being said the average home owner would look at the cost of taking a roof off or putting a new one over the old and they always picked the first. Keeping your old roof must of saved the home owner thousands and as a result asphalt was the most popular shingle.
Asphalt shingle had a little of a difficult time in the Greater Vancouver region with all our trees and rain. with the high condensation and debris that decomposed on roofs the shingles had a tough time trying to make it to it’s warranty. Unusually wide or thin shiplap as a nice big tree over your house your Asphalt probably will not last more than half of the warranty.
So now that paper based asphalt shingles is gone what now? well building code requires all old roofs come off before a new roof. The other is a shiplap deck, all roofing companies out there must inform the customer that the only way any roof manufacturer in North America is going to give a full warranty is if the shingles sit on plywood. In other words all roofing manufacturer would rather see shiplap decks disappear than come up with a shingle that can sit directly on shiplap

Asphalt shingles are the most common and durable type of shingle you will typically see on a home. Most homes that you drive by, or look at, will have asphalt shingles on top of them. These types of shingles present many economic advantages to your home because they are incredibly durable while still very affordable for anyone to use. If you are doing any type of roofing work that is budget conscience, this would be the product to trust and use, and your roofing company will more than likely recommend using these types of shingles because they will have the interest of your home in mind.
Most people might not immediately think that these very common roof coverings are really made from asphalt. The way that they are made is that asphalt is placed on type of a fiberglass sheet, which explains why a shingle is rough on the top, and smooth on the bottom. An advantage of using a fiberglass type backing is that it is very durable and long lasting, but also flexible at the same type. Shingles are supposed to flex depending on the weather so that they are resistant to cracking and falling apart. The typical life of a shingle, depending on how severe your local weather acts, is up to 20 years.
Even though shingles have the capability of lasting up to 20 years, or even up to 40 years, usually this is not the case. Hard rain and win usually reduce the life of the shingles on your roof, but this is typically is a very long process of wear. You can really expect your roof to be completely fine for at least ten years, and depending on the roofing company, very nice warranty and guarantee plans are available. These plans will include conveniences and services such as replacing shingles that fall off, or ones that no longer are working correctly.
Another major benefit of asphalt roofing shingles is that they come in many different colors. The reason for this is so that you can have them match and compliment the overall scheme of the exterior of your home. You wouldn’t want to have your house painted a color and then be stuck with shingles that do not compliment this painting scheme. You can also have this type of shingle made to resemble certain metals, or have them mimic being a wooden roof. The possibilities are really endless overall when it comes to this very durable and trusted option of roof covering.

Asphalt roofs can be made to match any home that you can think of. There are so many different colors and types of asphalt shingles that the possibilities are nearly endless. Architectural shingles are used on higher end homes and present that good looking finish that matches the architecture of the rest of the exterior. There are also different size profiles and how the shingles are placed onto the roof to give it different looks and features. Some of these different styles can mimic metal roofs or even wood roofing.
Despite the low price and the easy accessibility of asphalt roofs that does not meant the quality is not there. Even though this is not the longest lasting roof on the market, it still on average lasts for over a decade depending on the amount of abuse it takes from wind and inclement weather. Really the only drawback to this type of roof is that it can easily be damaged by violent winds and heavy rains. This type of damage is covered by your insurance provider, and it is not uncommon for people to get their roofs quickly replaced shortly after a major storm has occurred.
Even when damaged, because of the way this type of roof is installed, workers can go in and easily repair sections of the roof instead of replacing the entire thing. This is because asphalt shingles come in rows that are nailed directly onto the roof. These roofs are made to last, can be made to match the exterior of a home, and can also be easily repaired. With all of this in mind, it is a no brainer as to why this is the most common type of roof used on new and old homes.

If I had to vote for the most important accessory of asphalt shingles, nails would be hands down by preferred choice.
Nails keep the asphalt shingles in their place for many years. They protect them against wind uplift in windy and coastal regions.
Consequently, I would harness my frugal instinct at the time of buying roofing nails.
QUALITY OF NAILS
The best option is hot dipped galvanized nails (dipped in a hot zinc bath). Thus, a zinc oxide coating is formed on the metal surface which works as a sacrificial anode.
Electroplated galvanized nails are generally not recommended to be used with asphalt shingles.
GEOMETRICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Shank diameter:
It should be round 3mm. Barbed shanks are preferable.
Shank length:
It will depend on several factors:
- the existing norms
- the type (thickness) of shingles
- if the project is about new roofing or reroofing over all asphalt shingles
- number of shingle layers
- if nailing is near the ridge area etc.
- the type of the substrate.
Generally in U.S.A. the minimum recommended penetration length is 19mm whereas in Europe the recommendation is more flexible.
The massive quantity of nails used in Europe are 20mm long (25mm for ridges) which means that penetration is normally less than 15mm.
In case that the underside of the deck is visible e.g. in kiosks or pavilions, the manufacturer should be consulted for the idoneous solution.
Nailhead diameter:
This is very critical parameter with regard to wind uplift resistance. A minimum diameter around 9-10mm is recommended.
HOW MANY NAILS PER SHINGLE?
It depends on the number of tabs.
For example the normal three – tab rectangular asphalt shingles used in USA / Canada need 4 nails: two above the cutouts and two near the edges.
In Europe, mostly four-tab asphalt shingles are used and the number of nails needed is 5/shingles.
More nails are needed:
- in windy regions
- when slopes are very steep, normally bigger than 200%.
In this case two nails are used above the cutout. So 6 nails will be needed for the 3-tab shingles and 8 nails for the 4-tab shingles.

HOW MANY NAILS PER SHINGLE?
It depends on the number of tabs.
For example the normal three – tab rectangular asphalt shingles used in USA / Canada need 4 nails: two above the cutouts and two near the edges.
In Europe, mostly four-tab asphalt shingles are used and the number of nails needed is 5/shingles.
More nails are needed:
- in windy regions
- when slopes are very steep, normally bigger than 200%.
In this case two nails are used above the cutout. So 6 nails will be needed for the 3-tab shingles and 8 nails for the 4-tab shingles.
WHAT ABOUT STAPLING ?
Stapling is not recommended in Europe and as far as I know also in USA and in Canada.
Stapling can easily damage shingles.
WHERE EXACTLY TO PLACE THE NAILS?
In Europe we place the nails a little above the sealant strip. The nails are placed 2-3cm above the upper point of the cutout. The nails near the edges should not be closer than 2,5cm from the edges.
On no occasion should the nails be driven into discontinuities and problematic points of the substrate.
HAND NAILING OR PNEUMATIC NAILER?
Hand nailing is more accurate. It does a better job but it is slower and most expensive. If you cannot afford hand nailing for the whole project, at least use it:
- near the rakes
- for the first course at the eaves
- for the ridge and the hips
- for the valleys.
Because hand nailing is more accurate, it will reduce the possibility of wind uplift at this critical regions.
The nails should be driven vertically and flush with the upper side of the asphalt shingle securing it in its position.
If the nail is overdriven, it will harm the integrity of the asphalt shingle.
If the nails are underdriven, they cannot fix / secure the asphalt shingles properly.
In the case that the nails are not completely vertical, they will harm the shingle with their heads. These nails should be discarded and replaced.
CONCLUSION
Learn the right nailing techniques because they are critical for the expected life and behaviour of the shingles.
Do pay to buy the best quality nails in the market.

When sealcoating your parkinglot or driveway in ocean county n.j there are a couple ways to apply this appliaction of coal tar sealer. The first way to apply asphalt sealer is by hand with a broom or squeegee. This is a effective way to apply sealer because the broom brissels get in all the open pours for a smooth finish. But just because it was applyed by hand dosen’t mean it goes on any thicker. When sealcoating asphalt by hand the amount of presusure you put on the broom handle while pulling and pushing will determine how far the sealer will go per square footage.
Also when applying sealer by hand you must take in to consideration how long this will take in high traffic parking lots. The next way you can have your asphalt sealcoated is by squeegee machine.This is a great way to apply sealer because it goes on so evenlly. This machine releases sealer in front of the squeegee attached to the bottom of the machine which drags the sealer evenlly across the asphalt. The only down fall to this machine is there is no way to go up against curbs or boarders without making a mess. So when useing the squeegee machine you must sweep in all of the boarders in order to keep the job clean. The only issue is there sometimes can be a different texture between where the job was swept and where the squeegee machine applyed the sealer.
The last way to have a sealcoat application applyed is by spraying. Spraying asphalt sealer is also a great way to apply sealer to asphalt. Spraying asphalt allows you to apply as much sealer as needed to ensure a quailty job. Also when spraying asphalt the curbs and boarders can be boarded off to ensure no differeance in texture up to the curb line. Weather machine squeegee, sweeping or spraying on sealer a good job can be done with any of these options.The quailty of your job will come from the contractor you hired. Until now we have granted in this site a lot of tips regarding the composition and installation of asphalt shingles. Additionally we have commented extensively on their advantages and disadvantages.
Now it’s the time to offer you some insider tips. This might not be considered as a deontological practice from suppliers, but this is the way we work, bad or not.
We are fully convinced that these tips will prevent you from experiencing failures and disappointments and in the final count this is what matters the most.
TIP no 1
Check for the storage conditions in the suppliers warehouse.
Storing asphalt shingles outside
This we consider as a totally unacceptable practice and this conviction emanates mainly from our abiding experience and much less from the manufacturer’s instructions.
Asphalt shingles should always be stored indoors, in covered spaces. Exposure to sun, rain and cold will have deleterious effects on the shingles and their expected functional life will be compromised.
Exposure to the sun and high temperature
Heat radiation and high temperatures promote the evaporation of the more volatile parts of the asphalt binder and the release of the lighter oils.
This will render the asphalt shingles more and more brittle. This brittleness means aging. In conjunction with cold temperatures their proper installation will be much more difficult.
The leaching of lighter asphalt fractions will form stains on the granular protection layers of the subjacent shingles.
This “blackening” stains cause mild to severe discoloration and small to major aesthetical problems.
The phenomenon is aggravated with the simultaneous presence of factors as:
- presence of moisture
- excessive pressure due to many pallets high shingle stacks.
Pressure and moisture will help the bituminous substance to ooze from the underside of the superjacent shingles and permeate the granular protective layer of underlaying shingles.
Additionally some loss of granules is sure to happen because brittleness will lessen the bonding of the asphalt binder to them.
It’s not uncommon to discover excessive granule loss when opening a bundle.
When pressure coincides with high temperatures, shingles can stick together and many times this is an irreversible occurrence.
When this happens, you had better discard the shingles and ask for replacement.
It’s a great truth that the aging of the shingles starts from the very time that they are packaged and not from the time that they are installed.
Synergy of many damaging factors will accelerate the aging of shingles while packaged and for this reason right storage conditions are of utmost importance.
