Five Ways to Keep Tires Out of Landfills
Five Ways to Keep Tires Out of Landfills
Copyright (c) 2009 John Curry
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than 290 million scrap tires are generated in the United States every year. While recycling tires has increased dramatically in recent years, the fact remains that there are too many used tires clogging our landfills. On the surface, this may not seem like a huge problem, but tire piles are more than just a nuisance – they are a health hazard. They attract pests like rodents who nest in them and mosquitoes that live in the stagnant rain water collected in the tires. In addition, if the tires catch fire, they produce black smoke and air pollutants, posing significant risks to humans, animals and the environment.
Fortunately, we can help to solve the problem by finding creative ways to recycle and reuse tire rubber. Here are five ways to keep tires out of landfills:
1. Curb ramps – Made from crumb rubber, auto curb ramps are used to bridge the gap from street to driveway in neighborhoods where rollover curbs make the transition difficult. In a three-piece curb bridge set, 12 tires are recycled.

2. Highway resurfacing – In several states crumb rubber is being mixed with recycled and virgin asphalt materials attaining a high reduction of internal vehicle noise as well as a reduction of highway noise in highly populated areas. This reduces the amount of limited resource virgin asphalt being used.
3. Highway sound barriers – Many states are now using sound barriers to protect neighborhoods from the loud noises produced by nearby highways. In northern Virginia, a sound barrier was developed using a mixture of concrete aggregate, cement, water and small pieces of shredded tires. Sounds are absorbed by this “Whisper Wall.”
4. Rubber surfacing – Rubber tires are being used as playground and running track surfacing. The resulting material is durable as well as soft, lessening the impact of a fall and reduces injury to runners. This same material is also being used as mulch in road medians or landscaping areas.
5. Tires as fuel – Scrap tires can be used as fuel in shredded form or whole to make tire-derived fuel (TDF). TDF produces the same amount of energy as oil and 25% more energy than coal, and is used as a supplemental fuel source to wood and coal. In 2003, 130 million scrap tires were used for fuel.
These solutions are typically utilized by manufacturers, construction companies and government entities in their zeal to cut costs and be environmentally-friendly. Consumers can help too by using and properly maintaining durable tires, purchasing used tires and retreads, and buying products made from recycled tires like tire swings, floor mats and curb ramps.
If you’d like an environmentally-friendly solution to annoying rollover curbs, visit us online. We’ll show you how to reduce the jar to your car while using a product made from crumb rubber. Made in the USA, our auto curb ramps affordable, easy to install and good for the environment. For more info., visit Bridjit.com or our blog.

One of the major reasons of the popularity of these structures is their durable nature. These are extremely durable in nature as are composed of strong and sturdy materials. Asphalt and gravel structures require timely refinishing or replacement. But this is not the case with concrete driveways. Concrete driveways require very less care and maintenance, unlike gravel and asphalt. This means an individual needs not to maintain and clean them on a regular basis. Clearing away snow and debris from these structures is very easy. Moreover, resurfacing or resealing is also not required.
This is another major feature associated with these structures that is responsible for making them popular. You can get this driveway installed at your property in a wide range of textures, designs, patterns and colors. Some of the common patterns available include brick, cobblestone, etc.
Safety by far holds a lot of importance in everybody’s life. Getting a concrete structure installed at your property plays an important role in keeping you and your children safe. This is because such structures support a non-skid surface. So, you need not to worry about your children playing on the driveways.
These are some of the significant reasons behind the increasing popularity of these structures. Make sure that you hire a reliable company to get them installed at your property. Otherwise there are chances of ending up in paying more and at the same time you would not be satisfied with the quality of driveway constructed. So, to avoid any such trouble, get in touch with a professional company that can provide an ultimate solution for all your construction related problems.

Real estate investing has become almost a national pastime. Millions are made every year on the buying and selling of homes. Many of the smartest investors know the secret to realizing a great profit in real estate lies in what is known as “The Fixer Upper.” Have you ever noticed that one home on your street that could be so much more than it is with only a little work? Chances are that home is an undiscovered gold mine.
It is truly amazing what a run-down home can become with a little time, a little money and some TLC. Here are a few great ideas to think about when purchasing a fixer upper.
1. Paint. It is no real secret that a new coat of paint can bring new life to a home both inside and out. A different color scheme can also dramatically change the atmosphere and feeling of an older home.
2. Fixtures. Are the fixtures in the home old and outdated? This can be a large drawback when selling a home. Old out of style fixtures show disinterest in the upkeep of a home. This applies to all fixtures, lights, faucets, toilets and sinks. Take some time and find elegant new fixtures that fit the new identity of the home.
3. Floors. Are the home’s floor tragically out of date or in poor shape? Stained linoleum and chipped tiles are never a attractive feature. A quality laminate can do wonders for a home’s appearance. New tiles in high-traffic areas like the kitchen or bathroom are also a good idea.
4. Appliances. Nothing attracts the interest of buyers like brand new appliances. This can also serve as a safety upgrade if the old appliances have fallen into disrepair. New appliance can also drastically increase your asking price.
5. Landscaping. This is one of the most important aspects of improving the fixer upper. Curb appeal is critical when buyers come to view a home. If the curb appeal is neglected and the property is not attended to, many prospective buyers can be lost before they even step into the home. Tidy up the yard and plant some flowers. Ensure that hedges and bushes are neatly trimmed and that all walkways and access points are clear and uncluttered. Another good idea is to resurface the driveway if it is showing cracks and wear. A simple asphalt is easy to apply and adds a neat and tidy air to the entrance.
Don’t forget that many homes sales are decided within the first few minutes of seeing a home. The cosmetic presentation of a home is the single most important factor in attracting prospective buyers. Most of the above mentioned fixes can be done quite easily and without hiring a contractor or professional. Although it is never a good idea to do electrical work yourself unless it is your profession. The same caution definitely applies to working with and around natural gas. So be careful, and give your fixer upper the attention that it needs to bring you the profit that you desire.

Home Is Where the Heart Is, But We Loss the House
There’s absolutely no question, the economy is tearing our lives apart. For many of us our house represents family, stability, love and it keeps us grounded. We wake up there every morning; we eat, laugh, cry, entertain, play and go to sleep there every night. It’s the one place that we get to lay down our troubles, block out the noise of the world around us and feel safe. So we rarely, if ever, give any thought to losing it.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Being an Intelligent Seller
So you are selling your home. But, there are probably a few hundred, maybe thousand depending on your area that are doing the same thing. That’s a lot of competition. So how can you best ensure that your home rises to the top of the heap and gets noticed first? Well, there are a few agreed upon ways to accomplish this. Keep in mind that other sellers will be trying the same tricks to promote their homes so definitely take the time to make sure every aspect of the home is in it’s best shape before you list the home.
Exterior – The outside of your home is where the first impression will come from. This area should have a second-to-none visual impact and it should beckon viewers in to have a closer look at your home. A clean and tidy yard and immaculately clean frontage will go a long way to achieving this. In fact, a new coat of paint would be an excellent choice at this stage. If the driveway is a little worse for wear, then resurface it with an asphalt material for a quick and attractive boost. Gardens are a great way to increase the attractiveness of a home, but they also have the potential to drive buyers away if untended and unkempt. Gardens should be weeded and tidy with flowers and shrubs that compliment the home, not overpower it.
Interior – The interior of the home is a bit of a different story. It is usually far more personalized than the exterior and this can actually work against you in some cases. Buyers need to feel “at home” when they are looking through your property, personal items such as family pictures, an abundance of personal curios and items can decrease their ease while in the home. Try to remove these kind of items and store them away, essentially you want to have your home decorated like a show home. No personal effects, just a few pieces of furniture in each room to highlight the area and the colors and to give buyers a good idea of the room’s dimensions when furnished.

The first step in staging should be to de-clutter your home. Box up all of your knick-knacks and put any unnecessary furniture and seasonal items into storage. Excess belongings in your home can make it look smaller at best, or at worst like a hoarder lives there. A large amount of excess belongings can also make it difficult for prospective buyers to see what the bones of your home really look like, as well.

Can You Tweet Your Way to a Home Sale?
Twitter, the massive micro-blogging platform (140 characters, that’s all you get) could be your key to jumping in Google rankings and consequently getting more leads. This social networking site has been derided as merely a vehicle for teens and tweens to let their friends know what they’re doing every nine seconds, but has gained quite a following in all demographics.

Nothing can take the place of soap and water when it comes to marketing your home. Clean homes smell better – even if you or the buyer doesn’t notice it – and look better. Invest in some orange oil cleansers for a fresh citrus scent and scrub, scrub, scrub! Instead of replacing bathroom fixtures, clean and polish them. Have your home powerwashed if it is covered with vinyl siding.

The Wisdom of Hindsight in the Real Estate Market
Add to this mix, greedy money lenders offering low introductory interest rates (only to spike in a few years), and resulting in too many people owning homes they can’t afford. The demand for real estate begins to decrease, inventory rises, and eventually home prices drop. Sound familiar?

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Tips To Sell Your Home In A Down Market
If you are planning to sell your home, you may have realized that the process might not be easy as it would have been even a couple of years ago. The good news; however, is that there are some positive steps you can take to make your home stand out, even if the market is somewhat crowded.
A few years ago, back when the market was sizzling, homeowners mistakenly believed that putting a lot of money into their homes would pay off big time when it came time to sell. Unfortunately, they failed to realize that upgrading and remodeling are really only mediocre investments. In reality, very few projects actually pay for themselves, let alone bring in a profit.
So, what should you concentrate on when preparing your home for today’s market?
First, before you take on any projects, make sure they are the right kinds of projects. The projects which should take priority are those which will actually protect your home from damage and deterioration. This includes replacing the roof and making plumbing and electrical upgrades. These types of projects won’t do much to beautify your home, but they will go a long way toward preserving the home’s value.
You should also make sure that your home has curb appeal. At a minimum, buyers today are looking for a good paint job. If the exterior of your home is already in good shape, you may be able to get by with just doing a little touch up work. The main idea is to make sure that your home stands out. A little paint does not cost a lot and in the end it can really go a long way toward making a difference when it comes time to sell.
When painting your home; however, it is important to keep a few guidelines mind. First, make sure you are using quality paint. Remember, this isn’t just for show. Ideally, it is best to use two topcoats. This will provide protection against mildew, moisture and the effects of the sun. Second, work to make your home stand out but avoid colors that make your home stand out too much. Choose colors that have universal appeal.
Make sure your yard is tidy. Trim those shrubs and keep your lawn neatly trimmed; even if that means hiring a service to handle it while your home is on the market. The investment will be well worth it when your home sells. Avoid spending too much on sprucing up the landscaping; however. Ideally, you should spend no more than 2% of your home’s value on the landscaping before you sell. Any more than that and you won’t be able to get it back in the final sales price. Focus on spreading mulch around trees, trimming the shrubs and walkways and mowing the grass. If the season is right for it, add a few flowerpots around the patio and entry.
Spend a bit of time on your driveway. If it has not been resurfaced in awhile, now is the right time to take care of any cracks with some asphalt resealer. This is a good way to give your home the appeal buyers are looking for without spending a ton of money.
The basic rule of thumb when preparing your home for the market is to avoid doing too much overimprovement. Getting carried away will ultimately cost you. For example, contrary to popular belief, adding a pool to your home will do nothing to increase the final value. In fact, it will actually take away from the resale value as homes with pools cost more to insure and maintenance costs may turn away some would-be buyers.
Any home improvements you make should fit in with the neighborhood. Take a good look at the homes around your area. The key here is to make sure that you are keeping up with the neighbors, not trying to outdo them. If most homes in your local neighborhood have two bathrooms and you only have a bath and a half, it could be a good investment to upgrade to two bathrooms. Four would be pushing it.
If you’re planning to re-decorate, avoid doing anything that is too trendy. While it might be in fashion today, tomorrow it will just be outdated. Along the same lines, avoid over-decorating. Go with neutral colors that will allow buyers to envision how they will add their own personal touches to the home after they purchase it.
Take the time to clean out clutter. Remember that too much clutter can make rooms appear smaller. Clean off tables and countertops and remove any extra furniture you do not need. If necessary, rent a space to store extra belongings until the home sells and you move.
Create an atmosphere that is homey and comfortable. Make sure the home is clean above all else but also take the time to set the stage. Set your table, put out fresh flowers, make sure the bathrooms have guest towels, etc.
Finally, make sure your home is priced to sell. Take the time necessary to be sure your home is priced just right and not over or under-priced. Homes that are priced too high as well as those priced too low, tend to sit on the market longer. The longer a home sits on the market, the harder it becomes to sell. So, start off on the right foot by pricing it right the first time.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – The Curb Appeal of your Home
Curb appeal is the home’s view when you drive by or arrive at it. First impression is lasting and a lot of prospective buyers are drawn to purchasing your house because of its curb appeal. If you intend to sell your house, look at it in the eyes of a buyer. What are the best and worst exterior features of your house and what are the ways to further enhance of minimize them?
Below are some points that can help you decide if your house has what it takes to attract buyers and what you can do to add or enhance its appeal.
1. Do a thorough paint job. Fresh paint in attractive color draws people to your home. Find the best color that complements the structure and style of your house. Some houses look more attractive in muted color schemes. Try a safe off-white color that looks more attractive on your house.
2. Replace your old light fixtures. Add lights to brighten up your walks and doorways. Avoid using very bright lights; instead use lights with lower wattages to create more drama and attraction in the evenings.
3. Landscaping creates magic in your home. Set up a stonewall with lush greenery for that terraced front garden look. Illuminating your landscape creates wonder at night. Bring out your creative side and experiment on the best angle for your lights. Brighten your walk and portico with prairie style lanterns. You can have low lights pointing up at trees and bushes and along your pathway. Use solar lights that charge during the day so you do not have to use wires.
4. Making an attractive garage can create a big positive impact on your prospective buyers, especially if the garage is front-facing. Choose from the many decorative designs and accessories available. Find garage doors that compliment with the style and structure of your home.
6. For that added curb appeal to your house, consider resurfacing your driveway. You can use grass patterns or woven stones for a more appealing look than the usual boring cemented drive.
7. Add attractive decorative moldings in your doors and windows. Use shutters and make bland windows that emphasize the architectural design of your home. Flower boxes add color to the exterior of your house and make windows appear taller from the street.
8. Make a stone path or walkway to add to the curb appeal of the exterior of your home. Create a stone path in such a way that will look like something from a fairytale. Here you are free to choose the design and enhance that walkway. Keep it simple; create paths that complement your house.
9. Enhance your roofs. Asphalt roof is best in black or slat gray color. A slate roof gives a premium look to any home. For a more distinctive, older look, raised-seam metal roofs are best.
10. Keep your house and surroundings neat and clean. Remove debris off siding, walkways, decks and driveways by doing periodic pressure washing. Cleanliness will leave a pristine facade on your home. A clean appearance is the best curb appeal your house can get.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Exterior Basement Waterproofing Demystified-Part 1

If you are considering exterior (outside) <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.safemoldsolutions.com/”>waterproofing you owe it to yourself to, don’t pay to fix your basement twice like many, many of our past customers who hired substandard contractors (Some of them large companies with fancy marketing and slick Salesmen). In order to help You wade through all The B.S. (That’s Baloney Stuff, Folks!) in Your estimates and understand this kind of project: I will explain to you why most companies who call themselves basement Waterproofers aren’t actually Waterproofers; And I will explain the systems commonly employed nationally especially what is wrong With Them; I will Explain How to Fix Your Problems; And What we recommend that you do differently

When a basement is built what the code minimums require is damp proofing. Damp proofing is to trowel a mortar parge coat on the wall which is basically toweling mortar on the wall like stucco; then applying a dam proof tar or asphalt sealant. This basic technique has been used for the last 100 years.

Just imagine all of the advances that have been made in the last hundred years yet builders still seal the wall using this archaic process. It is guaranteed to fail every time; in fact in Cleveland, Ohio alone there are over 125 <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.safemoldsolutions.com/”>water-proofing companies in the yellow pages. What these “so-called water-proofer” do is dig up the basement and actually re-apply the exact same sealants and utilize the exact same techniques that already failed in the first place.

This usually means re-parging the wall with porous mortar and smearing some tar on it like a monkey! Have you ever known anyone that had an asphalt driveway? How often did they Have-To Re- Seal it? I can tell you I have, known many people with black top drives. When I was a kid growing up two of my neighbors had an ongoing debate about their driveways.

They couldn’t all be wrong. Or could they? Did you know that in the building codes there are actually two separate definitions for damp-proofing (tar) and waterproofing. Damp proofing: by definition means “something that helps to slow the penetration of water into the substrate”.

Water proof sealants are almost all exclusively used and installed commercially.(that’s because they are more expensive). The extra costs are what stop the average contractor from offering you , the homeowner, a product that is effective and will last and “stand the test of time”. We developed and recommend you use multi-step exterior waterproofing system which uses a cement-based fiber re-enforced wall resurfacing system and no less than two waterproof rated sealants. This is by no means the cheapest of methods, however, and it may or may not be the best system to put into place. Which system you should use depends entirely on the specific nature of your problem. There are no miracle systems than can solve all basement problems.

I’d like to tell you a story you’ve got to hear about a job I recently did for a Mr. Ron Sew yak on state route 20 in Oberlin. This is a sad story about a man who had to have his basement fixed three times in ten short years. Mr. Sew yak had had the walls of his home rebuilt ten years ago using conventional masonry techniques. They were rebuilt using 12″ blocks and type n mortar. A conventional parge coat was applied and tar. New tiles and backfill were added. This is what is considered “outside water-proofing”. Four years later the walls were leaking again!!! Exasperated the homeowner had Ohio State Waterproofing install their inside outside “waterproofing system” (inside) and they hoped their problems were over. Again he thought his problem was solved.

Sadly, I met Ron a few months ago. He asked me to come out to his house because his <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.superdrybasement.com/”>basement walls were severely bowed bulging and shifted off the first course and out of plumb. I was able to observe portions of the outside “waterproofing” system from ten years ago and the inside/outside system from six years ago both had fatal flaws but. Neither system was the cause of the problem. After careful inspection I assessed the real problem-bad framing. That’s right, it turned out that the first contractor (who did many things poorly) built the walls directly back up to and underneath the existing framing deficiency which caused the wall system to fail in the first place. A partial sill plate and a lack of cribbing on the gable end walls were behind their basements problems from the beginning. After the first winter ten years ago, the newly re-built wall began to crack… this opened water ways which made the walls leak. Ron’s second contractor performed an inside system which, while done poorly, also stopped active water puddles on the floor. Unfortunately it did nothing to stop the structural issues, which worsened and worsened, until he was forced to call me. So in a ten year period the walls have been repaired three times.

How to Prepare the Basement Before Finishing
The most important part of a basement finishing project is the proper preparation before the first nail is driven. Although not as appealing as custom wet bars, home theaters, tile floors, etc., it’s critical that homeowners are aware of the dangers that lurk in the basement. These dangers include moisture, humidity, water, insects, mold, and soil gases such as radon. A totally closed waterproofing system including basement wall protection is very important. (01:50)
How to Install a Basement Wall Panel
Learn how to easily remove a finished basement wall panel. It only takes 4 minutes to remove and reinstall this basement wall system for remodeling or waterproofing. (03:47)
A Closed Basement Drainage System
Often overlooked, the presence of an opening at wall/floor joint, whether intentional or just natural concrete shrinkage, should be sealed. One reason for this is Radon Gas. Its a fact Radon Gas enters the home through the smallest of foundation cracks. In the past it was a common practice to leave an opening at the wall/foor joint to allow a potential basement wall leak to run down the wall and enter the drainage system via this opening. It also increases humidity, musty smells and insects. (02:00)
How to Choose a Basement Sump Pump
Your sump pit has a direct impact on the performance of your basement sump pump. What is almost always overlooked when choosing a sump pump is the design of the sump liner or sump pit. Usually the first feature homeowners consider is the GPH, or, gallons per hour of water that the pump can remove from the basement. If the pit design can’t deliver that amount of water in the first place, then the pump will never reach it’s optimal capacity and will usually have a shortened life span. (03:09)
How to Slope the Drainage Pipe
By placing your drainage pipe in front of the footing during your wet basement repair, you relieve the hydrostatic pressure beneath your basement floor, preventing leaking floor cracks. You’ll also create a more efficient system by sloping the pipe “downhill” towards the sump pump liner. Sloping the pipe and sealing the wall/floor joint keeps the water moving and prevents stagnant water and that musty basement odor from occurring. Sealing the wall/floor joint will reduce radon & moisture entry (02:24)

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Selecting a Driveway For Your Home
The driveway is typically the first issue people notice regarding your home as they approach. From a distance, the home can be a superb view. A stunning home deserves an equally trendy driveway that compliments the house and adds value to the surface appearance. Selecting a driveway for your home does not must be a headache however it will require you to make some style choices so that the tip result is the perfect driveway to go together with your home.
The essential types of materials that you can opt for from are concrete, pavers that are created of brick and asphalt. Yes, there are some celebrities who have driveways inlaid with 24-karat gold letters but for the most part, folks choose from the other types of materials for their driveway. Your budget will dictate what sort of driveway you’ll afford.
If you are having a brand new home engineered, you may have to accept a concrete driveway as a part of homeowner’s association rules if the necessity is that all homes have concrete. This can be seldom the case, even in gated communities. If you have a little budget, the most effective driveway choice can be asphalt for the short term.
Asphalt is very economical for the initial installation. The dark look will add a made tone to the general look of your home. Do not rely on this look to last for long, however as a result of asphalt, that is black tar laid over stones, tends to fade very quickly. It can be necessary to possess your driveway paved once more in an exceedingly year or thus to revive that contemporary, dark appearance. As a result of the stones beneath tend to settle, it’s important to perceive that only some repaving can be done and then you may have to get rid of the complete driveway and pave from scratch again.
When you can afford to pay a very little additional, concrete provides a additional sturdy driveway. Concrete will not would like to be touched up every couple of years and isn’t subject to absorb heat in the identical approach that asphalt does. Concrete can be shaped additional artistically and give design choices that are simply not potential with concrete. The price tag is higher however it’s true what they are saying that you simply get what you pay for.
The most expensive driveway you’ll purchase is one created with pavers. Whether or not you would like to possess a cobbled stone look, diamond pattern or one thing customized, pavers are the method to go. This type of driveway material needs the longest amount of time to put in however the finished product will last for ages.
When you are getting ready to choose a driveway for your home, once you establish your budget, shop around for competitive prices. Bear in mind that asphalt is inexpensive however in the long vary you will pay so much a lot of on resurfacing and replacement. Concrete is moderately worth however can be at risk of stains from oil leaks or other automobile fluids that spill out and concrete inevitably cracks, that will be expensive to repair or replace.
