Yorkstone is a natural sandstone of very high quality, strength and durability which comes from quarries in West Yorkshire. It is perhaps best known for its use as a paving stone and has been used to pave most of the major towns and cities in the UK. The traditional London paving stone is yorkstone.

Yorkstone is sedimentary sandstone formed over 300 million years ago in the Carboniferous period as silt deposited by rivers, and consists of quartz, mica, feldspar, silica, clay and iron oxides. It was first quarried in Yorkshire in medieval times and by the 18th century a large industry had developed quarrying the yorkstone of the millstone grit and coal measures in West Yorkshire. The first quarries or ‘delves’ were developed in the outcrop on the valley sides and later began to move underground into large chambers or galleries. Deep yorkstone quarries and mines became possible after the introduction of gins and steam cranes and the earliest shafts were sunk in Hipperholme, close to Halifax in about 1860.

Initially the yorkstone was used for stone walling, and the traditional local skill of building dry stone walls with yorkstone continues in Yorkshire to this day. Another early use was for roofing, made from split stones known locally as thackstone or grey slate. Yorkstone’s fame really took off with the need for paving stone in the rapidly expanding towns and cities of the industrial revolution. Its versatility and durability led to its use in a huge range of building projects from footpaths, roads and dry stone walling to churches, cathedrals, bridges, houses and skilfully carved monuments.

The sandstone blocks used for making yorkstone products are separated into two main categories. One has highly visible sedimentary layers and is used for riven yorkstone paving and other riven yorkstone products. The term ‘riven’ comes from riving (splitting) the block apart. This block is referred to as flagrock or flagblock. The second kind of block is more compressed, and the sedimentary layers are not as visible and cannot be riven apart. This type of block is referred to as ashlar block and is used for sawn yorkstone products such as sawn yorkstone paving, building masonry and carved ornaments and sculptures.

Other layers in the yorkstone quarry include cross-bedded sandstone that can’t be used for stone paving or sawing due to its shape. These are often loose layers and are used for making rockery gardens and dry stone walling. Another layer is made up of hard shale blocks known as rag blocks which are also used for rockery gardens and for water garden features. Clay, mudstone, siltstone and soft shale make up the rest of the layers in the yorkstone quarry.

The colour of yorkstone depends on the minerals within its makeup and differs from quarry to quarry. Quarried blocks are rusty red to brown in colour on the outside and are usually a sandy yellow colour on the inside. This sandy colour can clearly be seen on the inside of the blocks when they are sawn into yorkstone slabs or riven into yorkstone paving. Orange bands known as concretion lines can also be seen on the inside of the blocks when exposed with sawing or riving.

Yorkstone paving is used to pave towns and cities but is also widely used by homeowners for driveways, footpaths and patios. It is also widely used in DIY and gardening projects for stone walling, stone steps, cobbled paving, rockery gardens, and garden stone ornaments.

When sealcoating asphalt parking lots or driveways in and around ocean county n.j. There are a few things that should be done a certain way to ensure you a quality job. Cleaning the asphalt is whats going to make or break your job. If the asphalt isn’t cleaned off properly and dirt and sand still remain on the asphalt there will definity be issues before long. Asphalt coal tar sealer will not stick to any dirt or sand. This will cause the sealer to harden over the dirt like a shell than krack and come apart like paint chips. Cleaning the asphalt is a must if your looking for a quailty protection for your blacktop. Once the asphalt driveway or parkinglot is cleaned off conpletely than crack filling can begin.Crack filling can only be preformed on cracks not holes. If there are holes in the asphalt this needs to be repaired with blacktop.

Crack filler will not work on pot holes the chemical make up of crack filler isn’t set up for a hole. All asphalt repair work should be done before any sealcoating or traffic paint begins. When useing crack filler there is a couple different types. There is hot crack filler which comes in a block and has to be melted into the break. Rubberized pourable crack filler can be poured into the crack and than squeegeed until smooth with the surface. Thses seam to be the most popular in monmouth and ocean county n.j. Either of these two crack fillers will work if used as directed. When filling cracks sometimes the filler hardens and sinks into the crack making for twice the work. This means another day of recrack filling what was allready done so the crack is completely packed with filler. This extra crack filling has to be accounted for on every job or it will become the contractors problem and wages lost.When sealcoating there a few ways to apply coal tar sealer. It can be swept on by broom, squeegee and also sprayed. Any of these methods will work on asphalt driveways or parking lots. There is a cold hardener that can be mixed in with the coal tar for a faster dry time. This hardener also in some forms can darken, harden, and also give for a more duriable finished product. Marshalls Drivesett Argent

Marshalls Drivesett Argent’s granite look makes it aprticularly suitable for more contemporary driveways. This product has a lower carbon footprint than granite but is still just as attractive. It is an attractive, more affordable alternative to the granite setts.

Drivesett Argent looks great when laid in a random course with a ratio of 2 large, 3 medium and 1 small. A rubber-faced vibrating plate should always be used.

The Argent Range looks great as a contrast edging block with so many other driveway and paving products.

This product is available in three popular Drivesett Argent colours: Graphite, Dark and Light to match a variety of property types.

Supplied in mixed packs of three sizes meaning less wastage and potenital cost savings.

This is a permeable version of the Argent range. It is a contemporary Sustainable Urban Drainage System with an attractive granite look.
