Generally three basic paving patterns are used assuming that the clay pavers or bricks are rectangular in shape. However there are some irregular shaped clay pavers like the wedge shaped ones that are used to create curved or circular paving patterns.
The three most commonly used paving pattern for driveways, walkways or patios are the Herringbone, Basket Weave and the Stretcher Bond patterns.
Herringbone
There are two basic types of Herringbone patterns. They are 45 degree and 90 degree patterns, which are widely used for paving medium or large areas and they create a highly intense visual impact. The 45 degree Herringbone pattern is suitable for driveways, patios and walkways and when they are laid down with a striking clay paver edging they present an eye-catching sight. The 90 degree Herringbone patterns are sober and have a somewhat subdued look about them. They are ideal for path ways, driveways or even for paving pools. Both the 45 degree as well as 90 degree Herringbone patterns are ideal for heavy vehicles usage. These patterns are widely recommended for driveways as they can withstand the load of heavy vehicles. Vehicles can brake, speed up, turn or screech effortlessly and with ease if driveways are paved with Herringbone paving patterns.
Basket Weaves
This is an eye catching pattern and may be used in matching and contrasting colors to create a delightful visual impact. When contrasting colors are used they create an impressive checkered look. However this pattern is slowly going out of fashion. This is highly recommended for creating a historical look. Stretcher Bond Pattern
Stretcher Bond Pattern is the most used, easy to lay, neat and simple type for residential purposes including pathways, driveways, sidewalks, patios and courtyards. In the desire to make a home look as stylish as possible, many people will think that they can complete many of the tasks by themselves. Some people have a lot of skills that can be used when improving the condition of a home but quite often, the decision to do things by yourself is driven by money. It is fair to say that hiring a professional to lay a new driveway is more costly than doing it yourself but for many people, hiring a professional provides better value for money. There are many different aspects involved with laying driveways and even someone that is quite handy may struggle with all of the individual aspects of laying a new driveway and failing to do the job properly can lead to a need for redoing the job or hiring a company to do the job.
Firstly, an experienced professional who deals in this industry is far more likely to be aware of the laws governing driveways and any local council regulations that may affect what can or cannot be done. Failing to know the laws is no defence or excuse and if the new driveway breaks some of the regulations, a person could be faced with a hefty fine and an order to remove the driveway from their premises. This will lead to further expense and inconvenience, making many people wished they had sought professional advice in the first place.
Placing a new driveway is not always so simple that it can just be laid over the existing driveway or path area. There is quite often the need for excavation work to be carried or certainly a levelling of the surface. This is a completely different task from laying down new paving and can require a lot of specialist equipment to get the job completed and successfully. This can present a huge barrier for people laying down their own driveway and again is why professional assistance should always be considered.
Even before the drive can be laid, there are many layers and bases which should be applied to ensure the area is level and will not suffer from erosion due to any underlying soil or unevenness. There is a lot more to laying driveways that would probably be first imagined and it would be unwise for people to attempt to complete the process by themselves, unless they had a good level of knowledge in the subject. There are many ways to save money but having a proper driveway installed first time can bring decades of happiness and joy, so there is great value for money to be had.

If your parking lot is in bad shape with some holes, cracks, traffic paint worn off, grey and dryed out but is 65 percent still in tact. There may be a chance it could be fixed before you have to spend serious money on paving an entire parkinglot. Asphalt prices will only rise while oil keeps going up. If you have a parking lot that is 200 feet in length by 100 feet in width you have 20,000 total square feet. Even just a reserfacing in ocean county n.j is going to cost you at least a 1.50 per square foot. Thats paving 2.5 inchs of I-5 top course over the asphalt that is already existing. This would cost you about 30.000 dollars. Thats just reserfacing the asphalt, it would only get more exspencive if you needed to remove blacktop or grade. But if you parkinglot is 65 percent or more in tact there are a couple of things that can be done to solve the problem.
All the areas where there are holes and badly broken asphalt needs to be cut out in squares so you are removing all of the bad area into the asphalt that is soild. This can be done with a wet saw. Once the broken asphalt and pot holes are cut into squares the blacktop can be removed. The next thing you want to do is compact the base that is exposed with a wacker tamper. Now that the cut outs are ready, the blacktop can be packed into the cut outs and loop raked till it is smooth. About a half inch above the original blacktop is where you want to be.This half inch will be perfect when being rolled due to the half inch pack form the roller. This will leave it perfectly flush with the old asphalt. This square seam can be worked in smooth with a tourch and some pinch rolling. Once the patch work is done you can move on to cleaning the entie parking lot with blowers. Any large single cracks can be filled with a hot crack filler.Than have the entire parking lot sealed with a coal tar application. This sealcoating will make the parkinglot dark black again and ready it for traffic line stripeing. Once the line stipeing is done you will have spent about 8000 dollars for the total job. It is advisable that you get the paving done as soon as possible, even if it costs slightly extra. Most firms come with a warranty of their work and you can rest assured that you will get the very best standard of work in return. A firm that is charging you too less does not necessarily mean that the work quality will be excellent. You can search online for various firms that deal with brickwork and paving.

How to Choose a Paving Material

When thinking about a hardscape design for a patio design, walkway, driveway or retaining wall, it’s natural and logical to think about the shape and size. However, just as important is the material you will use.
Many materials can be used for various types of projects. Each will present a different type of look. Costs can vary greatly. Colors are
another consideration.
With all these options floating around, how is one ever to make a good decision?
Blending Paving Materials
The first think I typically do when I am doing a hardscape design for a client is to look around and see what other materials are being used on the house and in the rest of the landscape. Once I have done this, I will consider materials that will look well with the existing elements.
For example, if the house is brick, I might think about using bluestone, which compliments brick very nicely. If you want to keep costs down, colored concrete is another way to go. Pavers can be used too, but selecting the right one takes a little bit more thought and creativity, since pavers can be similar to brick.
Paving Material Strengths
Depending on what type of hardscape project you are working with, certain paving materials may not be practical. For driveways, the material must have the right strength to withstand vehicular traffic. Bluestone can crack as can concrete. If done correctly concrete may last, but if it does crack, it is very difficult to repair and have it look good.
Many materials have a designated psi, or pounds per square inch. The higher the psi, the stronger the material.
Hardscape Installation Methods
You also have the option of wet laying the paving material in concrete or dry laying it. Dry laid projects are less expensive since they require less labor.
I happen to like this method. If something ever moves you can just re-lay it without worrying about repairing cracks in the joints. Polymeric sand can be used in the joints which will harden.
There are many different materials that can be used for each type of project. Which one you select should depend on the look you want and the amount you want to spend.
