Making Riven Yorkstone Paving: a Traditional Yorkshire Skill

Traditional stonemason skills are alive and well in West Yorkshire. Stone cutters known as ‘delvers’ continue to create the yorkstone flags which have been used for over a century to pave most of the major towns and cities in the UK. Yorkstone is a natural sandstone quarried in Yorkshire which makes stone paving of very high quality.
Riven yorkstone paving has a naturally rough surface because it is hand split, or ‘riven’, from large flagstone paving blocks. The blocks are formed in sedimentary layers called strata or beds which allows the stone to be split with hand tools. Flagstone blocks are hand-riven by a delver into riven yorkstone flags for paving using only a traditional hammer and chisel.
Yorkstone paving flagstones are usually made in random sizes due to the natural shape of the flagstone blocks. However the flagstones can also be cut or ‘gauged’ in specific widths and lengths to create custom paving patterns. Standard yorkstone flags are ususally 40mm – 60mm in thickness but can easily be cut to any thickness required.
Yorkstone riven paving is usually graded: the top grade and the most expensive is a hard stone in a sandy yellow colour with dressed or fettled edges and gauged widths and lengths; the lowest and cheapest grade is the softer brown ‘self-faced’ paving with sawn edges and random widths and lengths. The term self-faced comes from the way the paving is easily peeled from very loose natural beds. The loose beds are much easier to rive apart than the harder layered beds of the fettled flags.
Laminated paving should be avoided when looking for yorkstone paving flagstones. Laminating stone flags can split on their own or have very loose beds that look open. The loose beds are likely to split when the paving stone dries out. Laminated flagstones come from soft silty layers that have not compressed enough or from blocks damaged by frost before they have fully dried.
Riven yorkstone paving is still widely used for large scale paving projects in town centres. It is also used for pavements, patios and driveways in homes and gardens and is increasingly used for interior flooring because of it’s range of colours. Yorkstone paving has varying natural colours from sandy yellows through to greys and browns depending on the amount of iron oxide present in the flagstone blocks.

Driveway paving is quickly becoming popular among corporations and individual home compounds. Driveway paving on an aggregate surface is still used and it involves the use of gravel and crushed stone. Experienced asphalt driveway contractors will usually be able to bring out an eventual finish that is almost seamlessly even and without bumps. As has been earlier mentioned, the installation of driveways had better be left to the professionals who know what they’re doing. Better yet, you’re better off dealing with an experienced contractor who is in a position to make the right decisions regarding your driveway considering the fact that situations will always vary. That being the case, the contractor is likely to use their past experience to be able to determine how best to adapt to this new driveway they’re working on.
The advice to let the professionals handle the work on the driveway does not mean that you have to be alienated from the whole process. The driveway is yours and you have to install the look that appeals most to you. Work with a contractor that will allow you to select the design that you want. They will usually have samples for you to check and compare until you see the one that would be quite appealing when installed in your driveway. Sandstone pavers are an eternal favourite for all kinds of locations. Not only are sandstone pavers natural, strong, weather-proof and beautiful to look at, they can be counted on to lend a classic look to any area of home or commercial establishment such as hotels and function centres. Sandstone pavers can also be used to create a homely, earthy look for cottage style gardens and to create attractive and welcoming residential driveways and pool surrounds.
Because of the nature of its formation, sandstone is a very hard stone that can be cut into pavers in a range of colours from red and gold tones, to streaked black, grey and white. In fact, sandstone can be purchased in so many different shades, how do you know what is going to be the right selection for your paving needs?
To help narrow down your dazzling array of options, here’s a brief outline of the main colours and the types of construction where they are best put to use:

Dark brown : Deep brown or chocolate toned sandstone acquires its unique, rich appearance due to a high content of iron oxide. It is a great choice or exterior paving due to its ability to camouflage marks and staining and can be found in a variety of different surface finishes including sawn and polished.
Grey : Grey varieties typically range in tone from blue-grey to light grey, with some options of very dark grey available. The grey colour arises from the silica calcite that has formed between the quartz grains, cementing them together. Due to its neutral tones, grey sandstone is exceedingly versatile.
Yellow : Yellow sandstone is an ideal choice for paving in seaside properties or beside saltwater pools. Its particular qualities of composition make it especially resistant to acid erosion and saline wind damage. Like all sandstone, it is highly porous and so suitable for very wet locations.
Beige: Light coloured beige and white varieties are one of the most widely used ranges due to their classic appearance and elegant light grey or purple ‘veins’ that become visible when the stone is wet. Beige sandstone extremely strong and durable making it a top choice for use in paving.
Red: Red and deep pink sandstone is particularly smooth and soft due to its uniform grain size and can be found in natural, sawn or polished surfaces. Although it is durable and very tolerant to weathering, its soft nature makes it more suitable for ornate, carved detailing rather than paving.
Rainbow: If none of the above hues sound suitable for your paving needs, rainbow may be the answer. Rainbow sandstone acquires its stunning colour from a singular combination of quartz and other natural minerals. Its range of tones can span violet, red, brown and teak depending on the percentage of each constituent mineral.

Plenty of methods are there for laying pavements. Putting some concrete is the easiest method. It may be easy, but common method is using paving slabs. These paving slabs can be used in various ways. But before using one must analyze whether it is suitable to use in that particular place. Since the slabs are heavy and quite a big, surely people need assistance for using them. Whatever may be the place one wants to use these slabs certainly they need help.
First one must plan that where they want to use these paving slabs and in which place. Generally these slabs are used for covering larger areas. They can decide to use in big veranda or in their court yard. They can use these slabs in the drive way of their home. But this is not the best way for using these slabs.
Before planning to use these slabs in their courtyard, they must decide their choice of appearance for the court yard. They must ensure the availability of the slabs particularly the size and shape etc. according to their choice. When used in courtyard these slabs don’t show edges. Because of the lack of edges it is not preferred for paving driveways. But these uneven edged slabs give a beautiful and good look in some places. But it gives a bad look if it is not laid properly.
They can use these paving slabs for paving their pathways from their backyard to the front court yard. It can be laid by putting one slab after another in the prescribed direction. The pathways paved by using these slabs give simple and attractive look.
There are certain places where we don’t want to use these paving slabs. These paving slabs are the wrong material for using in the interior of the house. These slabs can also be used for creative construction though the paving slabs are having attractive and beautiful look, they are not the material for building projects. In reality usage of these attractive paving slabs is restricted to certain places. But by choosing wisely the exact and proper place for laying these paving slabs one can prove their style and choices. The Wonders Of Paving Bricks

Whether you have decided to pave an outside area of your house, yourself or you are getting someone to do the job for you, you have come to the right place to get more information on paving bricks. Paving bricks are different than wall bricks and have been manufactured and designed for the specific usage of paving. They are manufactured to withstand foot and vehicle traffic, as well as higher quantities of water. They come in different shapes, sizes and colors as well as different materials and thicknesses.
When looking to create an architectural design, it is important that the design element is carried out, throughout the home and the outside areas is just as important as the inside when pulling a look off. Paving bricks come in a variety of styles and colours to suit all needs.
The materials used for paving bricks are mainly clay and concrete bricks, with concrete bricks becoming more popular in the last 2 decades. Clay bricks come in lovely terra cotta, brown, reds and orange colours, while concrete bricks come in a variety of colours. Concrete bricks are more popular because they come in different designs, especially interlocking bricks, they are also more durable.
Paving bricks are no longer just rectangular bricks, but come in different shapes. A common shape is the wave shape brick which is made to interlock. Each brick can be interlocked, and it gives a lovely effect to your driveway or patio area. Many people do however still opt for the rectangular shape brick as well as the square shape, even the octagonal shape making it seem like a honey comb. The possibilities are many.
The texture of the brick also varies, and one can find a number of different textures. There is the smooth surface brick, the wavy surface brick, a cobbled surface brick and also a stone textured brick, which each add a different effect.
Paving bricks also come in different thicknesses. Whether you experience heavier traffic, such as in your driveway, a thicker paving brick is recommended and a thinner brick in a less busy place such as a garden path. Thinner bricks usually come in 38.1mm thickness, medium bricks tend to be around 60mm with the thicker more durable brick about 80mm in thickness.
The installation of paving bricks is easy enough if you want to tackle the job yourself and if you are confident then give it a go. There are many sites on line which will teach you the ins and outs of how to lay the paving properly starting with preparation of the site, the laying of gravel etc. However remember that there things to consider when the laying down of paving bricks such as proper drainage, and if you are at all in doubt it is best to let the professionals handle it.
Paving bricks are a wonderful and durable surfacing material. And with all the different styles and textures which they come in you can achieve the perfect look for the design of your house. Always remember to check if they pass the standard for paving bricks, so that you are assured of the best quality. Give your home the look you have always wanted with paving bricks.
