Installing paving is not a very complex thing to do, provided that you know and understand the fundamentals! Fair enough, not every person is cut out to be handymen or qualified pavers, but with some abilities and know-how you’ll be able to pave your own driveway. and not do a too bad job either!
The fundamental process goes something like this:
The 1st step should be to install edging at ground level. You can use additional bricks to do this or make use of specially designed edging boards treated with wood preservative. Then you would lay a couple of inches of gravel, followed by several layers of sand. You then level the sand so that you just leave enough space for a brick to still rise somewhat above the top of the trimming. You then lay the bricks in the pattern that you picked, go over the paved area with a plate vibrator and then use a garage broom to sweep between the bricks. Voila, a lovely new driveway!
You must admit that it sounds quite simple on paper, but paving is a precision job and if you truly desire to tackle the project on your own, at least call in some expert advice in the form of a buddy of member of the family who can supervise and give you a couple of tips.
A significant thing to keep in mind is that there is a difference between standard bricks and paving bricks. Invest in paving bricks if you ever want to pave your driveway. Standard bricks will break and chip when you drive over with your vehicle – definitely not suitable for a driveway!
When you have completed your lovely new driveway without a lot of glitches, it is important to properly take care of and maintain the area. For the initial few months (even up to a year if at all possible) you should vary your driving and car parking patterns. This will give all the paving bricks equal time to set perfectly.
A suitable sealant should be used to protect the driveway from soil, muck and gas. Generally a sealant is used quite often in the initial few months, where after it will only be required to seal the paving every few years. Once again you need to get an expert’s opinion on this.
Clear any heavy spills such as oil as soon as possible. The longer you allow such a substance on the paving, the more difficult it will be to clean. Invest in a good quality outdoor brush to sweep the paving on a regular basis and use a pressure wash to get rid of the most challenging dirt and grime once in a while.
It is possible to be very creative when it comes to paving. Paving bricks can be purchased in different shapes and shades and with a little bit of creativeness you can turn the dullest driveway into a total masterpiece of design. Then just maintain it properly for years and years of happy parking!

When going on a paving estimate where asphalt already exists there is alot to consider. If the asphalt is 65 percent solid aside from cracks this is a good indacation that you can reserface your asphalt. Next, is the main grade of the area pushing the water off of the blacktop. This is important in the process of deciding weather to remove the blacktop or to resurface what already exists.If the main grade of the asphalt parking lot or driveway is not pushing most of the water off the asphalt a rip out is unavoidable. What also needs to be considered, is if there is concrete walkways or aprons that the new blacktop must tie into.
If the existing apron or walkway has settled below the original asphalt and can not pitch water away from the house or building excavation is a must.When removing blacktop there is alot more involved in the job. First, the asphalt has to be removed by machine and loaded into a dump truck and transported to a plant or dump site. This requires more labor intensive work plus time. Gravel also has to be delivered in order to rebase the driveway or parking lot that is being riped out and paved. This will demand trucking and fuel cost to go up.Things like excavation of old asphalt, transportation of dump material, delivery of stone base, and machine grading are all big cost differences between the two.
Driveways or parkinglots that have good grade, walkways and aprons at the right height can be resurfaced. When resurfacing blacktop all the bad or low areas are pre-filled with asphalt and rolled till compact.This ensures the low spots are up to grade and the bad areas are filled solid. New asphalt is than layed at 2.5 inchs I-5 top course. This 2.5 inchs of top course is the same amount of asphalt that you would get when having a ripout done. This tells you that you maybe riping out your old asphalt for no reseason and spending more money than you need to in a rough economy.And always maintain your asphalt by sealcoating driveways and sealcoating parking lots to keep long lasting asphalt. http://keatorbuiltpavingandsealcoating.com

Asphalt driveways and parking lots will get more expensive as oil prices rise.To keep your blacktop driveways and parking lots from burning a hole in your pocket, Asphalt needs to be maintained every couple of years. Through my paving experiences I have come to find that filling cracks and sealcoating is the best way to maintain asphalt. After a year or two your new driveway or parking lot will begin to fade from black to grey.This is a sign of your blacktop beginning to age. Every day that the sun is shining on your asphalt it is drying your driveway or parkinglot out.
What you need to do is have your asphalt driveway or parking lot sealcoated with a coal tar application. The sealcoat will put flexablity back into your blacktop and give it that new dark look that you remember seeing when it was first paved. Most people dont know that this has to be done every couple of years and sometimes yearly. Yearly depends on how much sun your driveway gets during the day.You must also consider the harsh winters and the snow accumilation during that winter.Salt and melting componds are especially damaging to asphalt. I have found that driveways that are protected by shade can sometimes last longer but still need to be done every few years. Sealcoating your blacktop should be no different than doing your yearly leaf clean up or cleaning out your gutters. Sealcoating your driveway will be the difference between you getting your moneys worth out of the aspalt.
I have seen many driveways fall apart long before their time because of lack of maintenance. In my experince with talking to people the main misconception I hear is that they dont sealcoat roads so why should I seal my driveway. The difference between the road and your driveway is a lot of blacktop. When a driveway is insatlled in New Jersey the amount of blacktop that is actually layed is 3 inches compressed to 2.5 inches over gravel.. The road is made of gravel, 4 inchs of I-2 base course blacktop. Finally another 2.5 inch layer of I-5 top course is layed and roll. This amoumt of asphalt that I just described would be the equivalent to three driveways thick and it would not the be cost efficient to the customer compared to blockpavers or stamped concrete. The cost of blacktop installed is between two and three dollars a foot. Imagine what the cost of blacktop will be in years to come? http://keatorbuiltpavingandsealcoating.com

These days, children are seen spending most of their time on the driveways playing games such as skating, basket ball, riding bikes, hide and seek and many others. Young children are naturally very curious and love to move here and there to find out what is going on around them. In most of the cases, they run into the path of a moving vehicle after a ball or any other toy without any danger of getting hurt. Most of these children are prone to accidents because of any vehicle passing over an unseen child. Children under the age of six are major victims of such accidents.
It has been stated by a number of child safety organizations that driveway accidents are the second most cause of death of young children playing around their homes. The organizations further stated that the number of deaths occurring in these accidents is much more than the number of injuries. Thus, child safety has become one of the key concerns for the parents these days. Parents are seen worried about their child playing on driveways.
Parents need to take care of certain important points to prevent their children from being hurt while playing outside the homes. Some of the best ways to prevent this situation have been discussed below:
Properly educating child in this regard
This is one of the best possible ways of reducing accidents. By educating your children regarding the driveway safety, you can prevent them from being hurt in any accident. People with old fashion victorain or colonian style homes tend to shy away from paving thier driveways. They say that asphalt dosen’t blend with the old fashion victorian look. But the only other option is high priced stamped concrete or pavers. So alot of times customers will just stay with the never ending maintaince of gravel. Gravel will cost you more to maintain than asphalt ,concrete and pavers. But there is another option avaliable to people that are looking for a certain old fashion colonial curb side apeal for their driveway. This other option is called asphalt serface blending.
Asphalt surface blending is when you take any decritive clean stone and blend it with the serface of the blacktop driveway. You can get clean stone in almost any color. Everything is the same when doing this type of job. The driveway gets graded and than compact rolled. Once the grading part of the job is done than asphalt paving begins. When paving a driveway the paver is acually laying the asphalt first. Than the roller comes form behind to pack and cool the asphalt so it begins to get soild. When rolling hot asphalt it takes many passes to get the asphalt rock soild. When the asphalt has been rolled a few times you start spreading the clean stone over the already rolled asphalt evenly.
As the roller comes back through it will press the clean stone into the driveway. But revealing the colored stone on the serface of the asphalt driveway. This spreading of the decritive stone and rolling must be repeated until asphalt is fully hard. In many cases this type of driveway has to be half inch thicker than a regular driveway. This is because you can’t sealcoat this type of driveway you want it to turn grey. This will give your driveway that old fashion colonial look with asphalt. This will be much cheaper than getting stamped concrete or pavers done. This really works great for people who have larger driveways and are looking for that old historic look and don’t want to spend thousands more than they have too. http://keatorbuiltpavingandsealcoating.com
