Recycled Asphalt Driveway

A Healthy Roof is a Happy Roof So Don’t Forget About Roof Cleaning

A Healthy Roof is a Happy Roof So Don’t Forget About Roof Cleaning

Unfortunately, many people get new roof shingles and then soon forget that they have to protect their investment. Most make sure their lawns are cut, their alarm is working and the asphalt on their driveway is nice, but forget to look up at the one thing that people usually notice first; your roof. Just remember, a simple roof cleaning on a regular basis will keep it looking beautiful and protect your home at the same time.

So if you were to be asked if your roof was healthy, what would you say? Did you just have a roof cleaning? If so, then the roof shingles and the rest are probably in really good shape. But what if you didn’t just have a roof cleaning? What if you’ve never had one?
Then that question is a big harder to answer.

Roofing contractors when called to do a roof cleaning know exactly what to look for. They will check your roof shingles, look for broken tiles or shingles and easily see if there is anything that will make your roof weak or allow leaks which can in turn cause water damage. Of course, depending on where you live in the country, the roof professionals will know what exactly to look for during the roof cleaning. Just remember to do this once a year to prevent damage to your home and keep your investment looking bright and beautiful.

After the roof cleaning, your roof professional might suggest that you need roof shingles repairs or perhaps an entire new roof replacement. Obviously, he will explain what the reason is that you need this, but it is wise to heed his advice. They are trained in checking for present and future problems and most companies will guarantee their work for a specific amount of time following their roof cleaning and replacement.

If you are an eco friendly kind of person and you’ve discovered after a roof cleaning that your roof shingles have to be repaired or even more, then there are options that are not only friendly to the environment, but are very attractive as well. There is corrugated asphalt, tiles, natural stone and even roof shingles that are made from recycled products available to you. Just tell your roofing specialist that you’d like an eco friendly alternative and he will show you the choices available.

Curb Appeal Makeovers For Your Home

Curb Appeal Makeovers For Your Home

Your driveway is one of the first features visitors notice about your home. By adding a little color and texture, thus making it eye-catching and overflowing with character, you will be able to present a warm, inviting feeling to welcome your visitors.

Whether you’re upgrading your home or wanting to sell; increasing your curb appeal is always a great investment. If you’re selling your home, it can increase interest from potential buyers and add to the value of your home. There are many different ways to do a landscape makeover. Landscaping can be divided into two different groups. Hardscape and softscape. Hardscape refers to driveways, footpaths, landscape curbing, stamped concrete patios and decks. Hardscape materials typically include concrete, natural stone, and brick pavers.
Softscape refers to the groundcover – flower beds, trees, shrubs and grasses & flora.

Hiring a professional landscape design and landscape construction company is your best bet if you’re looking for high quality work and predictable results. But beware there are many fly by night companies only too willing to take your money and either not finish the job, or make a complete mess that has to be redone later at a greater cost. Sometimes the cheapest contractor doesn’t always work out to be the best.

A landscaping makeover will be dependant upon your budget and desires. To increase curb appeal and value, consult with a Landscaping expert. The best landscape construction and design companies sometimes charge a consultation fee to cover their time, but as with pretty much everything in life, you get what you pay for.

This article will address the hardscaping aspects of improving your driveway. Driveways have an important impact on the adjacent roadways and should facilitate a smooth vehicle entrance and exit to and from the roadway for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. Driveway design needs to include functionality, a safe access to the roadway, bylaws and existing natural conditions. Always check your city’s engineering regulations as to the minimum width of driveways, the cross-slope, grading, curb ramps, directionality and edge conditions at the intersection of sidewalks and your driveway. When removing old concrete please make sure your concrete contractor recycles the old concrete or asphalt.

The ultimate driveway makeover involves changing the contours of the driveway. Adding a curve with decorative concrete curbing and hedges can create a look of a lovely country road, or creating a circular driveway allows for many cars to come and go with ease. Regardless of the design you implement, a well planned and crafted driveway generates wonderful curb appeal and increases the value of your home.

For best results hire an experienced, bonded concrete curbing company who offer a warranty on their work and provide references. Previously, concrete pavers, AKA paving stones and blocks, were commonly used for hardscaping driveways, access lanes, parking areas, walks, patios, swimming pool areas and other flat surfaces, but they were problematic. Paving stones move and settle; they’re affected by weather and frost, and often after a couple of years become a trip hazard. A good concrete curbing or landscape construction company can provide beautiful hardscape surfaces with stamped and textured concrete, that aren’t subject to these problems. Concrete is durable and can last for hundreds of years, is available in a multitude of colors with stamped patterns to emulate a wide range of natural or popular stone surfaces. A stamped concrete driveway, footpath or landscape curbing around flower beds, can make a huge improvement in your home’s curb appeal and value. Curbing will also make cutting the grass and landscaping easier and faster.
If your space is big enough, you could include a water feature such as pond, waterfall or fountain to create a focal point in front of your house or beside your driveway.

Creating beautiful Hardscapes is hard work and requires planning, specialized equipment and skills, if you are looking for a spectacular finished result you will likely want to hire a Master Landscaper, or experienced concrete repair company.

Masterlandscapers.ca is a Landscape Construction Company featuring experienced Landscape Architects, designers and a Master Landscaper to create stunning Hardscapes and softscapes. Visit crackking.ca for concrete crack repair or landscape curbing

Pervious Concrete Paving: The Eco-Friendly Solution To Fight Water Pollution

]]>

Paved concrete surfaces are a common sight today. From driveways to parking lots we are accustomed to seeing these structures but we hardly realize what crucial effect they play on the environment! As more land is paved each day more rain water lands on the concrete pavements rather than percolating into the soil. The standard techniques of paving generally result in creating impervious surfaces which prohibits water from seeping into the soil. Experts have found increased use of impervious paving to be one of the key factors responsible for causing soil erosion, depletion of ground water level, flash floods and water pollution. According to a recent proposal a new fee will affect property owners of Lynchburg, Virginia. This will help to fund a “storm water program” depending on the extent of impervious pavements each of the family owns. Authorities have decided to adopt this measure after research showed that impervious pavements, by repelling storm water from soaking into the ground, resulted in creating runoffs which is responsible for water pollution in the nearby Chesapeake Bay. The solution to this problem is to adopt pervious concrete paving – an eco-friendly alternative that helps to maintain a cleaner surface while keeps pollution at bay.

One of the more straightforward ways to fight soil erosion and water pollution would be to stop using impervious paving completely. However, this is easier said than done as our roads, sidewalks, high ways, and parking lots are mostly covered with impervious paving, coated with asphalt or made up of impervious concrete. It is impossible to replace each of these with pervious concrete paving at one go! So isn’t there any solution to fight back? Well there is, and it involves a gradual adoption of pervious concrete paving for each of these constructions. For example we can start with the parking lots!

Traditional paving in parking lots includes concrete which is ‘impervious’ hence it repels drainage flow causing erosion of soil underneath. Using pervious concrete paving for parking lots helps to check erosion as well as eliminates runoff problems to a large extent. There are, however, certain temporary solutions available those using wood chips, gravel or even shredded and recycled rubber tires as core materials. But, these structures are hardly effective in case of excessive rainfall.

You’ve seen steel roofs on barns, but how often have you seen them on residential property? It’s very likely you’ll be seeing them a whole lot more around the country. With wildfires, hurricanes, hail and other extreme conditions damaging houses, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of the benefits of metal roofing.

Steel roof installations have more than doubled in the last five years and will continue to grow 15 percent per year, according to the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA). There is no material more capable of protecting a home from destructive weather conditions.

Benefits of Metal Roofing:

DURABILITY

A metal roof will last at least two to three times longer than an asphalt roof, or 40 to 60 years. In the warm, humid Southern states, metal is virtually immune to the unsightly mildew stains that often form on asphalt shingles. Properly installed, a metal roof won’t leak or rust and can withstand wind gusts up to 140 miles per hour.

Shane Scott, a real-estate entrepreneur from LaGrange, Georgia, renovates and resells older homes. He installed a metal roof for his own home in 2000 and was so pleased with it he’s purchased metal roofs for all the homes he’s refurbished since then.

“When buyers are considering a home, they’re always concerned about the condition of the roof,” notes Scott. “With metal, they know they won’t need to do anything to it for at least 50 years. With an asphalt roof, they’ll need to replace it within 15 to 20 years.”

PROTECTION

Most metal roof systems have passed UL 2218 Impact Resistance testing at its most severe level, Class IV. As a result, homeowners in hail-prone states who choose metal roofing may be eligible for discounts on their insurance premiums.

Ed Parker, a retired homeowner from Sharpsburg, Georgia agrees. “We’ve gone through two or three asphalt roofs on our home over the years and they discolor and rip off during wind storms, or leak due to hail storms,” Parker said. “Metal is much more durable.”

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

The National Association of Homebuilders Research Center estimates that 20 billion pounds of asphalt roofing is taken to landfills every year. Metal’s longevity removes the need for frequent roof replacements. Better still, it can be laid over the current roof, eliminating the costs of shingle removal and land-fill fees. If a metal roof is ever removed, it can be recycled.

Steel is the best choice for “green” buildings, where the goal is to reduce or eliminate chemical substances, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Unlike wooden shakes or some other traditional materials, steel is not vulnerable to insects, mold or rot. Therefore, it does not require the application of insecticides or other hazardous chemicals.

ENERGY EFFICIENT

Time-tested metal roofs save energy and reduce your cooling costs by as much as 40 percent, depending on location, says the MRA. The advent of new reflective paints with energy-saving properties has revolutionized the residential roofing industry.

While asphalt and cedar shingles absorb heat, the new cool pigment technology can reflect up to 85 percent of the sun’s radiant energy. Now, even dark colors achieve the “cool” attributes. An Energy Star roof can stay up to 100 degrees cooler on its surface than other roofs, so less heat is transferred into the building.

Wilmer Dykes, a homeowner from Cochran, Georgia, noticed a decrease in his energy bill of at least 25 percent after installing his metal roof. Dykes believes keeping his old roof on his home helped save energy. “By building the new metal roof over it, we created an air pocket between the two roofs, giving us an added layer of insulation,” he said.

LOW MAINTENANCE

A metal roof won’t crack, curl, split, rot or lose impact resistance with age. The only maintenance recommended for a metal roof is an annual inspection, clearing the roof of accumulated leaves or other debris and checking roof top ancillaries and air conditioners to ensure that they are properly drained and supported.

TAX AND INSURANCE SAVINGS

The U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005 allows for a tax credit for homeowners who install qualified energy-efficient improvements to an existing home, including metal roofs that meet the Energy Star program requirements. For more information, go to www.energystar.gov.

AESTHETICS

For some, a stigma still remains from the old, ugly metal barn roofs. However, a host of new colors, finishes and profiles has drastically improved the look over the last 10 years.

Don Smith, another homeowner from Cochran, said that aesthetics was one of the most important factors in his decision to purchase a metal roof. “I had seen steel roofs in the high-end subdivisions and really liked the look,” he said. “Now, strangers stop in my driveway and ask me questions about my roof because they like the look of it too.

Casey Paulk, owner of Paulk Landscaping serving central Georgia, agrees. “In my business, I see a ton of homes, so I’m always comparing, contrasting and making mental notes,” he said. “When I built my new home, I did a lot of research. I decided to go with a metal roof primarily for the aesthetics – I love the way metal looks.”

BE WARY OF YOUR WARRANTY

Finding a warranty that offers complete protection is harder than most consumers realize, says Clay Smith, owner of Mid-GA Steel and Supply (www.midgasteelandsupply.com), headquartered in Grantville, Georgia. “There is no way to tell if two metals lying side by side have any difference in quality,” he said. “Unscrupulous manufacturers can make 25-year warranty claims for cheap metal that actually has just a five year life before fading.”

Because of this risk, it’s important to find a manufacturer that puts its steel vendors’ coil numbers on their warranties, which connects the buyer with the vendor and the exact metal purchased. “This will ensure that the warranty will be fully honored throughout its duration,” Smith said. “Without the coil number on your warranty, you have no protection, regardless of what your warranty might imply.”

A LONG TERM INVESTMENT

Often one of the barriers to purchasing a metal roof is the cost, which is two to three times that of a shingle roof. However, buyers who realize a metal roof is a one-time investment versus an ongoing, life-long expense understand the considerable value it offers.

Asphalt roofs typically need to be replaced approximately every 15 years due to deterioration. Conversely, a metal roof is a permanent, extremely low-maintenance roof. “Although the up-front costs are considerably more than an asphalt roof, over the long term the durability of a metal roof makes it well worth it,” said Mr. Paulk.

THE FINAL SOLUTION

The rapid increase in the number of metal roofs nationwide will likely continue to intensify, as consumers better understand the durability and both the short and long-term savings metal roofs offer. Add to that the beauty of metal roofs seen in their own neighborhoods, and it’s easy to understand the surge in growth. The market is ripe; as baby boomers pay off their homes and settle into retirement, they are looking for a roof solution that lasts a lifetime.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than 290 million scrap tires are generated in the United States every year. While recycling tires has increased dramatically in recent years, the fact remains that there are too many used tires clogging our landfills. On the surface, this may not seem like a huge problem, but tire piles are more than just a nuisance – they are a health hazard. They attract pests like rodents who nest in them and mosquitoes that live in the stagnant rain water collected in the tires. In addition, if the tires catch fire, they produce black smoke and air pollutants, posing significant risks to humans, animals and the environment.

Fortunately, we can help to solve the problem by finding creative ways to recycle and reuse tire rubber. Here are five ways to keep tires out of landfills:

1. Curb ramps – Made from crumb rubber, auto curb ramps are used to bridge the gap from street to driveway in neighborhoods where rollover curbs make the transition difficult. In a three-piece curb bridge set, 12 tires are recycled.

2. Highway resurfacing – In several states crumb rubber is being mixed with recycled and virgin asphalt materials attaining a high reduction of internal vehicle noise as well as a reduction of highway noise in highly populated areas. This reduces the amount of limited resource virgin asphalt being used.

3. Highway sound barriers – Many states are now using sound barriers to protect neighborhoods from the loud noises produced by nearby highways. In northern Virginia, a sound barrier was developed using a mixture of concrete aggregate, cement, water and small pieces of shredded tires. Sounds are absorbed by this “Whisper Wall.”

4. Rubber surfacing – Rubber tires are being used as playground and running track surfacing. The resulting material is durable as well as soft, lessening the impact of a fall and reduces injury to runners. This same material is also being used as mulch in road medians or landscaping areas.

5. Tires as fuel – Scrap tires can be used as fuel in shredded form or whole to make tire-derived fuel (TDF). TDF produces the same amount of energy as oil and 25% more energy than coal, and is used as a supplemental fuel source to wood and coal. In 2003, 130 million scrap tires were used for fuel.

These solutions are typically utilized by manufacturers, construction companies and government entities in their zeal to cut costs and be environmentally-friendly. Consumers can help too by using and properly maintaining durable tires, purchasing used tires and retreads, and buying products made from recycled tires like tire swings, floor mats and curb ramps.

Do you have a driveway with a deep “rollover” curb that is hard to get over when pulling in or out of your driveway? Have you ever wondered what long-term effects these jarring scenarios have on your vehicles? In addition to being annoying, the damage to your car, truck or RV can be significant, affecting the frame of your car, its wheels, steering components, alignment , tire wear and, ultimately, decreasing gas mileage. Before we can correct the problem, however, we need to understand it.

These troublesome curbs started occurring in subdivisions built in North America after 1980 when developers installed extruded curbs and gutters and paved streets before the construction of the actual homes that would utilize them. This method saved developers money by eliminating the need for more expensive swale-type driveways and detailed planning, but it created curbs and gutters that were rounded but with a blunt top leading to the driveway.

Unfortunately, this design can cause significant damage to the underside of the vehicles that drive over them including cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, motorcycles, trailered boats, golf carts and more. The jarring effect on the vehicle can also impact the driver and passengers. Despite the damage, developers continue to use this type of rollover curb design in new neighborhoods nationwide.

To save the wear and tear to your vehicles and reduce the “jar to your car,” there are several potential solutions to consider:

1) Tear up your driveway and curb and have them redesigned and repoured to even out the grade to create a smoother entry. Pros: permanent correction of the rollover curb. Cons: expense, potential difficulty getting approval from your local municipality and homeowner’s association for a design change.

2) Fill in the rollover curb with cement, asphalt or steel so that the steepness of the rollover curb is lessened. Pros: relatively easy to implement. Cons: permanent, noisy, very heavy to move for maintenance.

3) Purchase curb ramps specifically designed to fit into the curb and gutter to create a smooth transition from your driveway to the street. Pros: convenient, inexpensive, made of recycled materials, made in the USA, water and debris flow freely underneath, sturdy but movable. Cons: Once you buy curb ramps, everyone in your neighborhood will want them.

Of course, the choice is yours as to how to best correct the problem. Whatever solution you choose, we encourage you to consider it wisely and to correct the problem soon. The long-term effects on your vehicles can be costly.

An Overview of Compaction Equipment

An Overview of Compaction Equipment

Compaction equipment is a term that is commonly used when referring to a wide assortment of different pieces of mechanical compacting equipment that is used for the purpose of compacting soil, concrete, rock, metal, and other materials for a variety of commercial, industrial, landscaping, farming, construction, and home improvement needs.

Some of that compacting equipment includes form tampers, landfill compacters,

Pneumatic tire rollers, trench rollers, single and double drum vibrating rollers, and compaction wheels to name just a few of the extensive number of various types of compaction equipment that is available today.

Small construction companies, landscapers, and homeowners can rent compaction equipment as an alternative to purchasing expensive equipment that may not be used for more than a project or two. Renting compaction equipment is definitely more cost effective for companies and individuals needing to budget expenses carefully, and for those not having a long term need for the use of compaction equipment. Bigger companies and those that use compaction equipment on a regular basis may prefer to purchase some compaction equipment, while continuing to rent other equipment.

Compaction equipment can lift and relocate existing concrete and is used to put down and smooth out new concrete, and so much more. Compaction equipment is used for clearing and leveling of land areas for developing, and is used in a variety of other building and construction projects.

Some types of compaction equipment are small units that are propelled by a person walking behind them. Larger pieces of compaction equipment can be ridden on and they are powered by engines. There is even compaction equipment that can be activated remotely for use in areas where it is safer for machines than people, like in narrow or deep trenches.

You have driven past many road construction projects in which compaction equipment is utilized in the construction and maintaining of roadways, although you may not have known all those bulky machines are considered compaction equipment. Commercial, industrial, and residential asphalt driveways and parking areas are also built with the use of compaction equipment.

Landfill compaction equipment is used to reduce the mass of trash so that it takes up less room in landfills, meaning more trash can be placed there before the building of new landfills become necessary. This practice conserves landfill space, makes trash more biodegradable, and is better for the environment and wildlife than building unnecessary landfills. Other compaction equipment is used to compact oil drums and other environmentally hazardous materials so that they can be disposed of properly and not harm people and the environment. Recycling plants also use compaction equipment to compact recyclables into manageable bundles so that they can be properly recycled and distributed for reuse, which also reduces the amount of trash going into landfills.

Certain compaction equipment can be used to remove obstructions that are preventing the proper draining and ventilation in roofs, which when not working properly can cause a host of expensive problems and damage to structures. Or to remove a damaged section of concrete so that repairs can be made to spare the costs of total replacement when only a section has damage. There are a variety of ways in which compaction equipment can be used on farms.

For instance, compaction equipment is used to destroy troublesome tree roots, and to level the ground for planting and to create necessary points for the proper irrigating of crops and soil management. The construction industry also uses a variety of compaction equipment to clear land for developing and for constructing purposes. Home owners use compaction equipment for many landscaping and home improvements such as clearing land for backyard gardens or BBQ pits, or for digging out and smoothing over an area for a backyard pond to be built.

Walk behind compaction equipment is often used in areas in which larger equipment is not practical such as around tanks, guardrails, curbs, and drainage ditches, and for small projects. And for many home owners such compaction equipment is much easier to use. If you need to use larger compaction equipment, you may have to hire someone to operate it for you if you are not familiar with using such equipment.

You can use the internet to compare a wide variety of compaction equipment, find local dealers and compaction equipment rentals, and to scout for pricing deals. You should speak with a knowledgeable and reputable compaction equipment dealer in your area about your project for advice on what compaction equipment you will need to use to complete your project with, and for an experienced opinion on whether to rent or buy the different compaction equipment you need.

Compaction equipment has many practical applications for use in the commercial and industrial developing, construction, farming, landscaping, and home improvement industries. Learn more about compaction equipment and how it can be used for completing your projects.

What is a Tarmac Driveway?

What is a Tarmac Driveway?

Tarmac, or an asphalt driveway, is an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a concrete driveway. A tarmac feature would be a mix of mineral aggregate and bitumen. The word tar in the name refers to black viscous material derived from coal. Besides aesthetic value, what are the main advantages of switching to a tarmac driveway?

Tarmac is cost-effective, even more so than concrete, which is cost-effective in its own right. Not only do you get a discount when using tarmac, but you can also save on the expense of installation. It takes less time to install tarmac than other materials. This saves everyone money, from government offices to contractors to homeowners.

Tarmac also dries quickly, which means that roads will not be blocked for a long period of time. Isn’t it quite frustrating when a part of the road is cut off because of construction for months on end? With a tarmac driveway construction and maintenance time is reduced. Major deterioration can be prevented by maintaining cracks and resealing roads.

Another advantage is in weather resistance. Tarmac can survive anything from storms to hail to the worst traffic conditions. It can just as easily support a car as a heavy truck! The smooth finish of a tarmac driveway helps to provide skid resistance, a major problem with concrete roads. This resistance also helps provide less splash back, less accumulation of snow and ice.

A tarmac driveway also helps to provide superior visual distinction between multiple road markings than streets do. What about the effect on the environment? Concrete is fairly efficient itself, since it’s mainly of materials like limestone, water and aggregate. However, tarmac is even better for recycling since it can be used over and over again. It can be used literally over and over again, without the need of throwing pieces away. Roads made of tarmac can be dug up and used and dug up and used for an indefinite period of time. This is great news for the green-conscious!

Constructing a tarmac driveway can help in preserving natural resources. Tarmac doesn’t run into waterways like other materials; in fact, it turns into solid mass at a fast rate. Whether you are building a park, creating a commercial establishment or a residential add-on, consider a tarmac driveway right by the entrance. When looking for a construction company, make sure the team is experienced and has a long history working with tarmac, concrete and other materials.

FP McCann specializes in the precast concrete industry and provides precast concrete manholes, concrete pipes and more. Whether you are looking for ready mix concrete or a tarmac driveway, FP McCann provides a high quality service for the best value.
