Should i use block paving or paving stones on my patio or driveway?

Summer time is here and many people are thinking of having their patio surface renewed. The two most popular options in the UK are block paving and flagstones. Here will will compare the differences of both materials. We will also look at which one is the better choice for your home.

Which option looks best?
Block paving comes in a variety of styles. The blocks are small and make an attractive surface. It is usually used on driveways because it gives a lot of detail over a large area. There are 2 types of block paving, the standard blocks are all one size and laid in a herringbone pattern. These blocks are most common in brindle colour with a charcoal border. They look good with most properties. Older or more traditional style houses look better with cobble style block paving which is laid in rows usually in 3 sizes.

Paving comes in many varieties from standard pavement style flags, to ornamental concrete flagstones from companies like Marshalls, to natural stone flagging like Indian Stone. There is an option for every budget and every desired look. The most popular option at the moment is Indian Stone as it comes in different shades and colours. This provides a cost effective natural look.

Which option is easiest to maintain?
Block paving is laid with a thin layer of sand in the joints. This attracts moss and weeds. Depending on where you live the surface will need cleaning once a year or so. If you choose to pressure wash the surface you will need to brush new kiln dried sand into the joints. It is best to apply a sealer afterwards too which will keep the surface clear for longer.

Paving is fixed together with concrete in the joints. This means that no weeds or moss will come from the joints making it an easier surface to maintain. However it will still need some attention when dirt sticks to it. Smoother flags will attract less dirt.

How to Clean Block Paving

Block paving is a beautiful addition to a house whether it is on a patio, walk or driveway but over time, it becomes faded, stained and overgrown. Cleaning block paving can quickly and inexpensively restore the beauty and life of a block paving project. Many companies who install block paving also offer a cleaning surface, which restores the surface without the need to purchase new tools or large bottles of chemicals. For the do-it-yourself homeowner, cleaning block paving is a weekend job that provides real satisfaction without backbreaking work. The total job may take anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on the size of the block paving area to be cleaned. Be sure to pick a day or days where the weather is likely to be dry.

The first step to cleaning block paving is to remove any large weeds that may be growing in joints. Once the weeds are removed, apply a fungicide to remove algae, mold and moss. It is helpful have a chemical sprayer for this application since it will cover a larger area more quickly. Be sure to use gloves and goggles when working with a chemical sprayer. Pre-treat oil stains and other stains prior to jet washing. Many people disagree with jet washing block paving since it will remove some sand from joints however; it is not that hard to reapply the sand after the cleaning project is completed. A useful tool for cleaning block paving is a rotary pressure washer head used in conjunction with a jet washer.  Many tool hiring shops have both jet washers and rotary head attachments available for hire. A rotary flat surface washing head keeps water splashing to a minimum, conserves water and directs the water flow more precisely at the surface. Using a jet washer will remove smaller weeds, stains and dirt without the need to scrub or use harsh chemicals.

If the block paving had sand joints, it will be necessary to reapply kiln dried sand after washing.  Purchase kiln dried sand and work into joints with a soft broom. Once the sand is reapplied, seal the block paving to prevent staining and mold and moss growth. The sealer may be applied with a roller or a sprayer.

Cleaning and sealing block paving should be repeated every few years and will keep the block paving looking neat and beautiful for many years.
